Goodnight Democracy: How Big Money Bought Our Democracy, Children’s-Book Style
Remember Goodnight Moon, the children’s book about a young rabbit going to bed?
Rootstrikers, a nonpartisan network of activists seeking to get money out of politics, put together their own Goodnight-inspired eBook called Goodnight Democracy. In this video, we read it to you.
It’s like Goodnight Moon, except instead of telling the story of a rabbit saying goodnight to things in his room and outside his window, it tells the story of Americans saying goodnight to a political system that’s supposed to serve the people. And instead of making you feel warm and cozy, it’ll likely leave you feeling cheated and angry.

NHRebellion Walk v2
In less than a month, the second #NHRebellion walk across New Hampshire begins. This time, there are four walks. The longest starts on the second anniversary of aaronsw's death — January 11. That's the date the first walk began as well. But in addition, there are 3 other shorter walks beginning in the south of New Hampshire later in the month. (You can see the routes here.) All four routes will converge on Concord on January 21 for a rally on the 5th anniversary of Citizens United.
Flore Vasseur published this piece in La Revue XXI in French. Steven Levy has republished it in medium with a translation by Kate Davis. (The piece is CC licensed).
Why the walk? The NHRebellion's aim is to raise the salience of corruption as in issue in the 2016 primaries, by recruiting citizens to commit to asking candidates "how will you end the system of corruption in DC." Post-election polling from NH shows the issue is about 50% more salient there than elsewhere, and everywhere among the "most important issues" that people identify.
Still time to sign up for a walk. Or if walking in January in New Hampshire isn't part of the plan, please help us cover the costs.
Election Day
Today is election day. Those words used to fill me with a sense of excitement, but that has waned over the last few years. In fact, I feel less politically engaged now than I have at any time since my first political awakening during the 1992 presidential campaign.
I used to be a political optimist, but only a few months spent working among the actual sausage machine made me eager to opt for another career. I felt like I couldn't make a difference, and that feeling persists to this day. I still think the process is important to our society, but I have ceded the advantage to those controlling the system.
If I am to get involved again, it will be through Rootstrikers or a similar organization.
It felt very strange to fill out my ballot last night and push through it without a lot of background on the issues. My instincts acted as they had before, but I was unaware of any tricky poison-pill type ballot measures that I usually am prepared for.
It felt good to leave Nancy Pelosi's arrow blank, a minuscule protest against congress. It is just so utterly dysfunctional that our country is bucking under its structural defects.
I dread the double primary season that is effectively starting now. I hope Hillary does not run and the Repubs try to out yahoo each other.
We need new hope, and many of us are too burned and cynical to want to get back into the game.
I guess the forces of evil are winning.
Excellent lecture on corruption tonight
Kiril reaches out to Professor Lawrence Lessig for guidance and mentorship. Professor Lessig is author of Republic Lost, has launched the Mayday Pac, a superpac meant to help remove money from politics, and is one of the founders of Rootstrikers. He has mentored beautiful visionaries before, and we feel he is one of the founder’s of the New Way.
Can you help get this message out to him?
