Corrupt Bargain: (1824) Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and William Crawford were all running against each other in the 1824 presidential election. Jackson won the popular vote but not the majority of the electoral vote, so the election went to the House of Representatives. At the last minute, Henry Clay decided to support John Quincy Adams (who ended up winning), and Clay got the post of Secretary of State. Jackson was mad and accused Adams of promising Clay the post in return for the election, but that probably wasn't true.

Reconstruction: (1865 - 1877) The period following the Civil War in which the federal government tried to fix the south. In the beginning, southern states would answer to the federal army when it came to elections (they made sure that Confederates weren't given positions of power) and tried to ensure the rights of freed slaves. The Compromise of 1877 ended Reconstruction and federal control of the south, which promptly began mistreating African Americans again. (The North made no effort to stop this.)

Interstate Highway Act: (1956) An Eisenhower thing. It was a mass-funding of interstate roads by the federal government. The real purpose of this act was to make it easy to move troops from one part of the country to the other, since this was during the Cold War.

Homestead Act: (1862) An act that helped get settlers to the West by offering 160 acres of government land to any person who would farm it for at least five years.

Fair Deal: (1948) Truman's version of the New Deal. It slightly increased the minimum wage, enlarged social security, and sought to provide low-cost housing to help eliminate slums.

XYZ Affair: (1798) The French were doing an annoying thing with American shipping, and when President Adams sent people over there to negotiate, the French demanded a bribe. Adams refused, but he ended up looking like a bit of an idiot.

Federal Reserve Act of 1913: (...1913) Holy shit I don't even know. After the Panic of 1907, people needed a thing that would regulate currency efficiently. This thing was called the Federal Reserve Bank. I hope there isn't a question about this on the test because I don't understand this at all.
