Hannah Tailford was born in Heddon-on-the-Wall, Northumberland. In her teens she acquired several convictions for theft, and as a result spent time at an approved school in Liverpool. Following a further conviction for theft, at South Shields, her parents refused to have her back, so in July 1952 she was sent to an approved home in London. St Cuthbert’s approved home was in Ross Road, South Norwood, but there is no trace of it now and the residential Cuthbert Gardens stands on the site.
