Random Fact of the Day: Dryers on Stage
Rush added dryers to their set because they had space to fill and it was also done as satire. Sometime in the 2000s, Rush added dryers in the background of their set. This came about because Geddy Lee started running his sound through the front of the house console, This eliminated the need for a stack of amps on Geddy's side of the stage. This goes back to at least 2002, At the 2003 SARS concert in Toronto, that when they were most famously used.
The dryers had actual Rush t-shirts tumbling around in them. Aside from dryers, Rush had other appliances on stage such as refrigerators, vending machines, and even giant rotisserie ovens that cooked real chicken which were attended to by a chef throughout.
It has been said that the use of appliances in the stage set has also been done as satire. Other rock bands that tour arenas have stacks of amps in which only a few are working.
