The Story Doctor had a lovely time with the Nursery children at Woodlands Primary School in Carnoustie. We picked rowans and apples from the school garden, and made rowan jelly. While it was cooking, we sang the Highland fairy Lullaby, and heard some stories.

I know some of you have eaten rowan jam before and I have not. I will be making some tomorrow but I also have some fresh fennel. I'm trying to figure out if the flavor profiles of caramelized fennel would work with the rowan. Thoughts?

Sharp and acrid yet sweet and succulent all in the meantime, this customary accompanyment to chilly meat is overflowing with flavor, and legends !
'Rowan tree and red string - have the witches all in fear'
On May eve Rowan crosses used to be worn in UK and were now and again secured to steers (or their stables) for insurance against witches and other 'scoundrels'. Legend has it that the crosses must be made without a metal blade to work legitimately. Rowan branches were likewise purchased inside on a Good Friday as this tree had a notoriety for solid security against psychic strengths. Rowan Jelly
Yesterday I spent a marvellous day foraging in the hedgerows. Today - Rowan Jelly is on the menu with Apples from our own tree too :o)
