things that were actually queerbait:
in reference to lgbt content, "don't worry, you'll be happy"
in reference to lgbt content, "something might happen between two characters"
that entire klance interview
introducing shiro as gay at sdcc and giving fans false hope of shiro being in a relationship, only to neglect to mention that adam dies after three seconds of screentime - & getting praised for "the lgbt rep"
capitalizing off of klance such as tagging youtube videos as 'klance', using screenshots of klance for thumbnails, and using pictures of adashi for thumbnails/posters
romantic coding in the show - ones that -directly- parallel het relationships in the show. i.e. we had the bonding moment and then had it copied word for word to fit a/l and are expected to think that k/l wasn't romantically coded but a/l was
intentional usage of gender neutral pronouns when referring to lance's love interest
literally the entire fact that they had two years to shut down klance and still didn't
"lance's milkshakes bring everybody to the yard, i can say that much"
gay coding a character (including having him check out another guy) only to pull some het romance out of left field last minute
literally just treating lgbt content like a spoiler in general, especially given that the only "content" we had had no real bearing on the plot other than a plot device to stack up more ptsd/trauma
let's the entire fact that if klance was a het couple it would have long since been set up and happened
on top of all of the adashi things, their relationship was ONLY truly confirmed out of canon. anyone with straight goggles strapped on saw nothing.
and finally: the fact that they see nothing wrong with everything they did.
things that may not necessarily be queerbait and came from people that probably didn't know where the show was going but contributed to the fire and probably shouldn't have done that:
netflix twitter feeding the fire with the picture of the paladins and separating keith and lance from the others
netflix twitter tweeting that they ship klance
klance comments from crew (other ships also got comments)
i know there's more but i feel like this is enough to make a fine case. and please, for the love of GOD: think rationally here. you can't queerbait yourself.
all of this was done full well knowing that a HUGE part of the fanbase is lgbt, that a huge part of the fanbase are kids and young adults, and that those two overlap dramatically. they know what other shows like steven universe are doing right now. they worked on legend of korra. they full well KNOW their audience. they knew what people would read into. they capitalized off of the promise of lgbt content, and they flat-out did not deliver. i agree some things in this fandom are a reach, but there is WAY too much of this stuff to just be everyone overreacting.
when this many people in a fandom agree on this: there's a problem. and i really, really hope that everyone, the showrunners and other crew on other shows included, learn from this and take notes. because its honestly heartbreaking to see so many kids and other lgbt folk be so heartbroken over this.
sure you can keep telling me that conformitygate isn’t canon. unfortunately I never shut up.
