Just got my feelings put through a meat grinder by “Venom: The End”, a comic that addresses the most angsty OTP scenario of all time: character A is immortal, character B is a human whose lifespan is a tiny cosmic blip.
I know I’m very late here but, oh my god. There is a lot of real estate in this comic devoted to robots blowing up planets and whatnot, because reasons or something, BUT THIS!!! This core premise! Exquisite. Especially with charming and silly panels sprinkled throughout, like this:
(Oh my god, they were soulmates. Cue movie!Venom “perfect match” dialogue.)
Venom artificially extending Eddie’s lifespan by CENTURIES so they can stay together longer! I wish the comic had spent more time on this specifically. How did Venom react to Eddie aging? Did they ever talk about human mortality, especially as Eddie grew old? How did Eddie feel about having his lifespan artificially extended? How much of that time was Eddie actually conscious of, and how much was essentially Venom piloting Eddie’s corpse around because he couldn’t bear to say goodbye? Vital questions that take a backseat to Tony Stark Robot Go Boom in the comic, but that CAN and WILL be addressed through fan fic.
Ultimately Venom realizes there’s nothing left of Eddie’s actual identity and has to let him go. Eddie’s remains crumble to dust in Venom’s arms. TWIST THE KNIFE
I imagine being hostless and alone is a terrible state of being for a symbiote. But Venom is— and he pines and yearns for Eddie. With no host Venom could take any shape, but he chooses to look like his and Eddie’s combined form. IM?? SAD?????
By this point in the far-distant future the universe is a totally uninhabitable wasteland and there’s no way that Venom, with all his (suddenly acquired, hilariously out-of-nowhere) godlike power can bring fragile human Eddie back. Venom’s solution to this problem is fraught with EXACTLY the level of melodrama that he learned from Eddie himself??? He literally tears himself apart, sacrificing his life, to rebuild the entire universe... just so biological life, including Eddie, can exist again.
After reading this I yelled “BUT DO THEY GET TO BE TOGETHER AGAIN” while sitting alone in my house! The answer is clearly NO, Venom doesn’t exist anymore, Venom HAD to destroy his own existence in order to create a universe where Eddie can live— meaning that they’ll never meet, and just... oh my god
Anyways this whole issue absolutely trashed my feelings and I fully intend to make that everyone else’s problem by writing sad fic about it
