THREE HEADCANONS:
Hagrid treasures his friendships more than anything else. Since the death of this father and separation from his mother, he places special, even a familial, emphasis on all of his friendships. Dumbledore is a second father figure to him, although there’s a level of fear there Hagrid didn’t have with his own father.
While he lives on the grounds, Hagrid travels as over the summers to vast and varied locations. How else would it be possible to know the variants of hippogriff plumage? Or see how far the Peruvian Vipertooth can spit? Hagrid doesn’t read, much, but he makes up for it in an uncanny ability to chat to just about anyone, and to put the most uptight at ease by being his genuine self.
On his last visit to Ise, Japan, Hagrid consumed so much plum wine that he was put in a muggle jail for being disorderly in public (mostly it was that the locals were concerned if he passed out they wouldn’t be able to move him out of the street without special equipment) and did not, as expected, pass out from inebriation. Instead he spent the next eighteen hours loudly singing the same west country pup tune, marching up and down his cell, without stop.

BIOGRAPHY:

It’s not uncommon to be bullied in school. It’s not uncommon to face that trauma for years afterward.
What is uncommon, is to be framed by your bully for murder. To be expelled, and (while unrelated) orphaned. And to watch your bully grow up, graduate, and as a rolling stone gathers no moss, takes more and more power, gets away with murder and worse than murder, recruits the good and the bad for their twisted vision of power, kills thousands, and manages to cast their country under a dark cloud for a decade.
Rubeus Hagrid has hidden for the past forty years in the shadow of Albus Dumbledore from the twisted creature, barely wizard, thing that threatens the wizarding world.
And it’s a small victory that Hagrid counts himself as the happiest he’s ever been, for within the small campus he’s restricted to during the school year there are endless distractions to distract his good nature. From Aragog and his expanding family in the forest to the few anxious and frightened first years he makes it his duty to seek out and invite to tea, Hagrid doesn’t find his day-to-day wanting for anything. He has the ear of the most respected, wisest and bestest wizard of all time (Dumbledore), and a job that keeps him grounded in what he does best.
Gamekeeper isn’t one of the more respected careers at Hogwarts, it isn’t well paid or well resourced, but Hagrid’s large network of creatures and beasts in the forest and on the ground (and in the castle) have turned what was once an outpost for a hedge-trimmer to twenty-four/seven security and maintenance… provided he is sober and focused.
Most days Hagrid wonders where his one remaining relative, his mother, is. He’s even heard a few rumors about his childhood bully, and certain plans Riddle has to use his mother’s race against him and the rest of wizardkind. Most days Hagrid has a chat with Minerva or Aragog, pours himself a whiskey, and goes to tend the bowtruckles, because if he doesn’t, no one will.

Hagrid will never be able to produce a patronus, but if he could it would be something like a dolphin.

While Hagrid lives at Hogwarts year round, but he totally at one point in his life, has owned a muggle ant farm and dedicated a year of his life to watching those damned things.
