Honolulu Marathon Training: Week 4, Run #14-6mi pace 3mi easy
So, obviously this run was cut short. I went out and it was lightly drizzling and it was kinda nice and I was still sweating heaps but I felt cooler because of the rain. And I was just doing my thing and actually felt really good and then I think close to 2 miles in I ran past this guy who was talking to another dude sitting on some steps, and then I stopped at a stoplight at the corner. He then started walking and crossed so he was ahead of me and after a little bit I resumed running, and then noticed that he kept on looking back at me, and in front of him coming in my direction was this other dude on a skateboard holding something that looked like a long pole. There was nobody else in the immediate area except me and these three guys and literally every preservational instinct in my body was screaming at me not to get any closer. So I literally turned around and hightailed it back.
I have no idea if these guys actually were up to no good or what, but being alone in a new city where I don’t actually know the neighborhood or the local street smarts has got my radar up. I’m a city kid, I am not trusting and my number one instinct is to avoid anything that looks shady, especially at 7am when I’m running by myself.
I could have kept going after I turned around and got closer to the house where I’ve been staying, but on my way back the rain picked up significantly and I was holding my phone and didn’t want it to get messed up, plus I had an interview and it was later than I wanted it to be, so I decided not to risk it.
I’m really disappointed that this run wasn’t to schedule--I’ve been perfect so far for this whole training round, and I’ve been really proud of myself. But these things happen and I have to accept that. I move to my place tomorrow and so maybe I’ll try and do my 6 miler there, since tomorrow was supposed to be 3 miles anyway. It’s a much quieter and more residential neighborhood so it’s actually probably a better location for the 6 miles anyway.
So, less than stellar day. I had pictures that really emphasized the amount of sweat/rain I was drenched in at the end (i.e., you could literally see it dripping off my chin) but I decided to hold on to a shred of my dignity and chose this one instead.
Whew. Sorry that was so long!
