Lyla came into the Argus safe house and John knew right away that something was wrong.
That was an understatement, he thought. Of course something was wrong. That’s this life. Ever since Chase had come to town, that life became a short fuse for everybody in his sights. After Susan’s disclosure and unmasking of Oliver, (and the rest of Team Arrow) and after her execution on live TV, John, Rene, Curtis and Dinah were forced to go underground, to protect themselves from the public outcry Chase put in motion. John didn’t know if Lance was also in the same crosshairs, but he had stepped into the role of Mayor after Oliver disappeared. Maybe that was another part of Chase’s plan. At this point, there was nothing certain. John also didn’t know where the rest of the team had run to---probably a good thing considering the consequences if any of them were apprehended and interrogated. John was safe with Argus. The Agency was not as prone to exposure and infiltration as civilian strongholds---wherever they may be. The safe house was like a fortress, well-guarded and armed to the teeth. But the rest of the team---who knows. All of them know how to stay in the shadows, a skill Oliver taught them during their training.
Oliver. He and Felicity had completely gone off grid. There was no intel on where they disappeared to. But John suspected it wasn’t anywhere local. Now that two months had passed without a word, he was sure of it. Oliver took Felicity, John hoped, to a location not easily found. Oliver had superior survival skills and would utilize them to protect Felicity and ensure that both of them stay safe.
“John,” Lyla said to him. “Where is JJ?” Is he alright?”
“Yeah,” John reassured her. “He’s in the back room, sleeping.” He looked more closely at her. “What’s going on?”
Lyla began to unconsciously rub her hands together. “John,” she said. “Lian Yu has been compromised.”
“Compromised?” John asked. “What do you mean compromised? It’s a whole island. How could it be compromised? What happened?” Then John tapped into her worry. “Oh shit, Slade Wilson. Lyla, tell me.”
Lyla shook her head. “Our team has gone silent. There’s been no communication from them for over a week now. Satellite recon shows heat signatures for only five people. There were fifteen Agents on the island. Whatever force that’s infiltrated the island must have taken them out.”
“Slade’s cell is empty. If he got out…he would account for one of the five signatures detected.”
John shook his head. “So who are the other four?”
Then John knew. Oliver and Felicity were on Lian Yu. It would make sense. Oliver knew the island probably better than anyone---except for maybe Slade. It was a smart move. Oliver would be able to see any potential threat coming. But how did they get there?
Lyla saw the distant look in her husband’s eyes and knew he was on to something. He was working on putting the pieces together.
Finally John broke away from his mental deductions and let Lyla know. “Baby, that’s where Oliver and Felicity went. I’m going. If Slade, and I’m guessing probably Chase and Talia as well, are hunting Oliver, he’s going to need back up.”
“Lyla, I owe both of them my life a hundred times.”
Lyla sighed and reached up to touch John’s face. “I know, honey.” She thought about John’s plan for a few seconds, and then responded. “Okay, but I’m coming with you, and I’m bringing fifty Agents with me. Is that enough back up for you?”
John smiled at her and nodded. “We really do think alike, don’t we? I was also thinking that maybe we…or maybe you, can locate the rest of my team. You know where they are, don’t’ you?”
Lyla nodded. “John, this isn’t my first rodeo. Yeah, I know where they are. I assigned Agents to keep eyes on once the three of them started running. There’s one thing I can’t figure out though. How did Oliver and Felicity get to the island? Those kinds of resources wouldn’t have been available to them.”
Again, John made the connection. “Bravta,” he told her.
When the arrow penetrated Felicity’s right calf, her running days came to a screeching halt. She went to the ground, and her momentum from their morning run catapulted her into a roll, perfectly executed, just like Oliver taught her.
Oliver was immediately by her side. “Felicity, are you…” Then he saw the arrow in her leg. “Oh god…” he breathed. Oliver looked up and started searching for a possible location of the arrow’s point of origin.
“Oliver… “ Felicity gasped from the pain that gripped her. “Where…who shot…”
“Hang on,” he told her. In one smooth motion, Oliver scooped Felicity off the ground and into his arms. He suddenly felt exposed on the trail they were running on and he turned to carry her into the surrounding trees. It should give them some cover if the shooter intended to let another arrow fly.
“Oliver, you don’t have to carry me,” Felicity said to him. “I can…” Sudden pain shot through her leg as Oliver leapt over a fallen tree branch. She cried out as the arrow moved inside her leg. “Just don’t drop me, okay?”
Ever though Oliver was focused on finding safety for them, a small grin appeared on his face from Felicity’s attempted bravado. Oliver began pacing himself, and in between short breaths, he made an obvious deduction.
“Felicity, we’re not alone.”
“Yeah, you think? Don’t talk, Don’t think. Just keep running, Oliver.”
There is nowhere they can run to, Slade thought to himself. They were bracketed, with himself, Chase and Talia creating a triangular crossfire.
“Like shooting fish in a barrel,” he whispered. Slade was never any good with a bow, but Talia insisted they use arrows on this hunt. It was the kind of stealth she wanted. Slade had been aiming for Felicity’s shoulder before he let the arrow go. But a leg will do.
“Oliver,” he spoke aloud. “I asked you how the girl with the glasses was doing, didn’t I. Not so good now, huh?”
He lined up another shot and smiled.
