I’ve put off writing this, and I’ve written it and rewritten it over and over again. There aren’t words for this one. I said goodbye to Lawliet yesterday after almost 2 years by my side. He’s one of my original boys - he and Light were the first pets I got as an adult, and that I was solely responsible for. There’s something so special in that that I can’t put into words. My life has changed so much in the last two years, and he’s seen it all, and I just don’t know how to let go of a small piece of that.
It was his time. He had started to go that way and I had hoped he’d pass peacefully at home as he still had a good quality of life and was enjoying his food and leisurely walks around the cage. However, he deteriorated over the weekend. Starting with an eye infection which I began to treat, but then he developed an impacted scent gland on his stomach and was uncomfortable. I got him to the vets to help him over the rainbow bridge. It was the last thing I could do for him, for all he’s done for me.
I’m almost numb and yet incredibly raw at the same time. I’m glad he made it to his second birthday last month, and I’m glad to have had him for the time I did. I just feel like I’m winded right now. I couldn’t even bring myself to write this yesterday.
I’m throwing myself into my other babies right now, and giving them all I’ve got because every precious second counts. They have such a small lifespan and that just makes us more responsible to make every day a good one 💕 I’ll miss my little Lawlipop more than I have words for. Thank you for being one of my first babies when I was still learning, thank you for helping me start this family and thank you for helping me start a new life that was all about us. I love you 💕 #hamster #dwarfhamster #russiandwarf #campbellsdwarf #lawlietthehamster #animals https://www.instagram.com/p/B7TuGHKAX5v/?igshid=wmblljx0b4vu
Bless my old boy, Lawliet. He's starting to look his age now, and has dropped a bit of weight. I've rearranged his cage to help him get to things easier and maintain a good quality of life 💕 I've also altered his diet to help him gain some weight back to help him out. He's mellowing in his age and has stopped biting me for daring to wake him up 😂 #hamster #dwarfhamster #russiandwarf #campbellsdwarf #lawlietthehamster https://www.instagram.com/p/B600IHcg2y6/?igshid=1l13humn0lod2

Happy 2nd birthday, Lawliet! He's one of my OG's from when I started keeping hamsters again so I'm really pleased he's made it to 2! He's always been a healthy, happy little boy who prefers his own company and just about tolerates me 😂 He doesn't mind talk and treat time, but he really doesn't like to be handled or pet and never has done. He's still my gorgeous old man, and I love spending time with him 💕 So glad to get another Christmas with him! #hamster #dwarfhamster #russiandwarf #campbellsdwarf #lawlietthehamster https://www.instagram.com/p/B6bMVa5gqAD/?igshid=bk4fqx7bdt39
Fingers crossed this is the last loss of this year 😔 Tinkerbell, my shyest dwarf hamster, deteriorated rapidly this weekend. Saturday, she was bar-biting aggressively which is unlike her. I gave her a health check myself and couldn't find anything physically wrong. I gave her some metacam to try and settle her as pain was my first thought. It did nothing for her unfortunately. She also was grizzling and squeaking throughout Sunday, and just seemed unhappy. I rang the vets this morning to make her an appointment, but knew that something was really wrong and that it likely wasn't going to go well. All day, she was grizzling and squeaking to herself and just wasn't right at all. I tried more metacam and she just didn't respond to it which I've never seen before with any animal. The vets did a thorough examination of her but also couldn't find anything physically wrong. This just became an unsolvable situation. Tinkerbell's behaviour had completely changed and she was incredibly unhappy. Since she was unresponsive to pain medication (something I've never even seen before!), it was determined to likely be neurological, or a brain tumour. Either way, something was very seriously wrong and we couldn't treat it, so it was kinder to help her cross over the rainbow bridge and stop her suffering. I'm crushed with how fast it all happened. She wasn't a young girl at 1 year and 9 months old, but it's heart-breaking to see her deteriorate so fast and be left with no treatment options 😔 Rest well, little girl 💕 I love you 💕 #hamster #dwarfhamster #russiandwarf #campbellsdwarf #tinkerbellthehamster https://www.instagram.com/p/B6JeO6Kgx33/?igshid=6vv30aabbrkh
Happy first birthday to this precious boy!!! I had to rudely wake him up for this birthday photo as he doesn't get up til 3am 😱 Although he's a late sleeper, I check on him every other day just to make sure he's okay and give him a little cuddle. Ralph was diagnosed with skin cancer a few months ago but so far, it isn't interfering with his beautifully lazy lifestyle 💕 #hamster #dwarfhamster #russiandwarf #campbellsdwarf #ralphthehamster https://www.instagram.com/p/B5oVrcXg1Zd/?igshid=wcst431iax04
This year isn't done with its heartbreak yet 😔 Said goodbye to Pippin this morning. Pain relief wasn't working for him anymore, and we couldn't figure out what was causing his pain despite him showing obvious signs. He hasn't been the same since Merry passed away honestly. I don't think he ever really recovered from it. I hope he's reunited with his brother now and can be happy again. I've never seen a hamster behave so unhappily when seperated from a sibling. It's almost like he lost the will to keep going. #hamster #dwarfhamster #russiandwarf #campbellsdwarf #merryandpippin #animals https://www.instagram.com/p/B5fgMnXAO0_/?igshid=37g9t8unypwa
