To put these immense Russian losses in perspective, imagine a large stadium full of Russian troops ... eliminated within the short period of just 3 months. Almost unfathomable! All that sacrifice, and so much more: for what? #cannonfodder 🇺🇦🏟️💙💛😳🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . The Ukrainian army has eliminated more than 90,000 Russian troops over the past three months, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Jan. 5 after meeting with Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who is expected to lead the Defense Ministry soon.
The news follows Zelensky’s Jan. 2 nomination of Fedorov, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister and minister of digital transformation, to head the Defense Ministry. The appointment must also be approved by parliament under Ukraine’s constitution.
Fedorov has led the Ministry of Digital Transformation since 2019 and is the only minister whose post has remained unchanged during Zelensky’s presidency.
Zelensky and Fedorov discussed the changes the minister will potentially implement in his new role. Fedorov is expected to present draft decisions within a week aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, according to Zelensky’s statement.
Meanwhile, An oil extraction plant in Dnipro was damaged in a Russian drone strike on Jan. 5, spilling about 300 tons of sunflower oil onto city streets, Mayor Borys Filatov said.
The spill forced the closure of the city’s embankment to traffic for two to three days, Filatov said.

Ukraine Captures North Korean Soldiers Amid Ongoing Conflict in Kursk
Ukraine Captures North Korean Soldiers Amid Ongoing Conflict in Kursk Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that Ukrainian forces have captured two North Korean soldiers who were fighting alongside Russian troops in the Kursk border region. This development follows Ukraine's renewed attacks aimed at retaining ground captured during a rapid incursion in August, marking the first occupation of Russian territory since World War II. Ongoing Conflict and Counterattacks Ukraine's efforts to hold its positions in Kursk have been met with fierce counterattacks from Moscow, resulting in significant casualties for Ukrainian forces and the recapture of over 40% of the 984 square kilometers (380 square miles) initially seized by Ukraine. Zelenskyy reported that the captured North Korean soldiers, despite being wounded, are in Kyiv and are communicating with Ukrainian security services. Details of the Capture Zelenskyy shared photos of the two soldiers, who were shown resting on cots with bandages. He emphasized that capturing them alive was a challenging task, noting that Russian and North Korean forces had attempted to hide the presence of North Korean soldiers by eliminating wounded comrades to prevent their capture and subsequent interrogation. Intelligence and Communication Ukraine’s security service (SBU) provided additional information about the captured soldiers. One soldier had no identification, while the other possessed a Russian military ID card from the region of Tuva, which borders Mongolia. Communication with the soldiers is facilitated through Korean translators in collaboration with South Korean intelligence, as they do not speak Ukrainian, English, or Russian. One of the captured soldiers reportedly claimed he was misled into believing he was going to Russia for training, rather than to engage in combat against Ukraine. The SBU confirmed that both soldiers are receiving medical care in accordance with the Geneva Conventions and are being investigated with the assistance of South Korean intelligence. North Korean Military Involvement A senior Ukrainian military official previously estimated that a few hundred North Korean troops fighting with Russian forces in Kursk have been killed or wounded. This estimate follows reports that North Korea had dispatched between 10,000 to 12,000 troops to assist Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The White House and Pentagon confirmed last month that North Korean forces are actively engaged in frontline combat, primarily in infantry roles, and have been operating both alongside Russian units and independently in the Kursk region. With reference to the lyrics of Bob Dylan’s song, “Blowin’ in the Wind,” these staggering increasing losses of Russian troops don’t seem to ever be enough for Putin to realize that too many have been killed or wounded. 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . Russia has lost 421,000 troops in Ukraine in 2024, the “highest price since the start of the invasion,” Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said in a Telegram post on Dec. 28.
The figure includes both dead and wounded and is part of the total losses of approximately 785,000 Russian troops since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022.
Syrskyi, reporting on the outcomes of a meeting regarding the Armed Forces’ activities, said that the Ukrainian military was “maintaining control over strategically important areas, securing the western part of the Black Sea, and weakening the enemy’s military and industrial potential.”
He also said that the Armed Forces also established the Unmanned Systems Forces in 2024, which are “necessary in the conditions of modern technological warfare.”
This branch is the first in the world to use unmanned aerial, surface, subsurface, and ground systems, as well as robotics, in combat operations.
Syrskyi said that compared to 2023, the volume of deliveries of unmanned systems to Ukrainian units increased 19 times, and the number of enemy targets hit and destroyed increased 3.7 times.
He also said that Ukraine has reduced Russia's military potential through "DeepStrike means."
DeepStrike, a long-range strike strategy, gained traction in 2024 when U.S. President Joe Biden authorized the use of U.S.-made ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory on Nov. 17, closely followed by the first use of British-made Storm Shadow missiles.
Since then, Kyiv has intensified its campaign of strikes on Russian territory, targeting military and industrial facilities to weaken Russia's war effort in Ukraine.
Syrskyi also said that a decision had been made to extend the terms of basic training of mobilized personnel.
Such a decision was announced on Dec. 27, when Syrskyi himself said that Ukraine's military leadership planned to extend basic military training to two months in order to "increase the readiness and safety of soldiers.
