27. Pets
On a sunny afternoon, Macey invited Ryan over to her house so they could work on some music together. Once he arrived, Macey lead him to the living room as they set down their stuff on the coffee table. They soon began to discuss ideas and jot things down. “Hey, want something?” Macey asked as she pointed her thumb to the kitchen. “Oh no that’s ok,” Ryan said. “Really? Well I’m getting something..” Macey lead on. Ryan was silent for a moment. “Uh just some water,” he responded. Macey chuckled then made her way to the kitchen. She returned with a small tray with two glasses of water, a small bowl of chips, and another small plastic container. “Thanks,” Ryan said, taking the glass in his hand. Before he could drink from it he noticed the small container. “What’s that?” “Just some fish food.” “And you brought that.. why?” He asked. “Well of course for this little guy,” she said as she looked to the small fish tank that was in the middle of the coffee table. “Wait so that’s real?” Ryan asked as he looked closer into the tank. “Yeah! What do you think, I would have fake fish?” Macey said with a laugh. “Well I don’t know, it could be decorative,” Ryan said as he modestly scratched his head.
“Well yeah, these are real. Remember the day we went to the fair and we played all those carnival games? You won me a fish on one of them. Then the next day I convinced my parents to let me buy four more to keep him company,” Macey explained as she sprinkled the food into the tank. The two watched as the fish came up from the plants below and ate. “I’m surprised on how much effort you put into it,” Ryan said. “Well yeah of course,” Macey said surely. “I remember you named it Lucky since I almost didn’t win it,” he recalled with a laugh, “What’d you name the others?” “So there’s Lucky, Winner, Ribbon, Star, and Song,” Macey said as she counted them off her fingers. “Sounds like those fish have some high ambitions,” Ryan joked. “Only the best for these guys,” Macey played along as she proudly put her hands on her hips.
“Hey this gives me an idea for something. Maybe in their perspective,” Ryan said as he nodded his head toward the fish. He typed in his laptop as he began to sing lowly. “If I could break through. Just for a day. Less than two inches from you, yet so far away. But this glass wall between us won't keep us apart. I will sing out my heart. Just for you, my love,” he hit enter and a small tune followed. “Ryan! You’re gonna make me want to jump in there and give them a hug…!” Macey said as she tenderly stroked the tank. They both laughed and watched the fish swim around. “Just think about it, the fish could feel distant being in the tank and looking at us through a wall. But at the same time, they could be hearing everything we’re saying since they’re right there. They’re not as distant from us as they think,” Ryan explained. “So this song is really only about the fish?” Macey asked with a raised brow. “Um… not necessarily..” Ryan said bashfully. “Good cause I was about to say, I don’t think the fish would develop romantic feelings from me feeding them,” Macey laughed. Ryan smiled and shook his head as he continued to type on his laptop, trying to mask the redness coming to his face.

6. Shopping (For Needs)
“Hey, sorry again about dragging you along with me for grocery shopping. Just so happens you wanted to hang out when uh I had to do this. You didn’t have to come,” Ryan said as he modestly scratched his head. “What? Don’t worry, I’m fine doing anything together. I make it fun,” Macey winked as she and Ryan walked into the grocery store. His older sister Eira had sent him out to get groceries after school and by then, Macey had texted asking if he could hang out. Ryan didn’t want to say no so he offered she join him. “Ok~ what’s first?” Macey chimed as she peeked over his shoulder to read the list he was holding. “Well, we need apples and some other fruits,” Ryan said as he grabbed a grocery basket. They made their way to the produce section and Ryan began to look through the section. After a moment, he heard Macey chuckle. “Hey Ryan, why don’t we add some flair to our next performance?” She mused. Ryan looked to find Macey juggling two apples in her hands. Ryan could only blink for a moment before chuckling. “Hum ok.. What if we add a third or a fourth to really wow them?” Ryan teased. “Uh.. No actually.. We don’t need the wow factor,” Macey said nervously as she caught both apples then put them down in the basket and laughed.
They went along and continued to gather groceries. A song they recognized began to play on the speakers throughout the store and they found themselves nodding along to it. Ryan looked up at a shelf for something he needed that was at the very top. “Hey I can get that if you want,” Macey shrugged, being taller than him and able to reach better if she tiptoed. Ryan smirked and leapt up, pushing over the small box and catching it in time before it hit the ground. “No need,” he responded coolly. Macey could only stand and smile brightly at him. As they went through the rest of their groceries, Macey began to sing and hum the song playing under her breath. Once a part of the chorus played, she couldn’t help but move along to it. As Ryan checked things off the list, Macey smiled and playfully danced around him. He hadn’t noticed at first until she playfully nudged him. He looked at her and smirked with a shake of his head then continued to look through the list. She rolled her eyes and nudged him again. She then went behind him and held his shoulders and made him move along with her. “H-hey cut it out,” Ryan shyly laughed. “Nope,” Macey responded simply and turned him around to face her. She took his hands and span around with him then moved his arms along with her. Ryan shook his head again before finally deciding to play along as a blush came to his face. The two laughed and danced around the empty aisle. Macey always made it her mission to see Ryan loosen up and have fun from his more shy and quiet demeanor. The song soon ended and they couldn’t help but laugh at each other.
“I bet we look like crazy people..” Ryan said. “No one’s around anyway,” Macey chuckled. “The security cameras,” Ryan joked as he pointed to one on the ceiling at the end of the aisle. Macey laughed and playfully waved at the camera. They then went and paid for their things, Macey accompanying Ryan to his house as they held each other’s hands on the way. “You were right Macey,” Ryan spoke up, a soft smile coming to his face. Macey gave a curious tilt of her head. “You do end up making things fun,” he finished with a short laugh. Macey smiled and kissed him shortly on the cheek. “Oh I do, do I? Well we can keep it going. We can race to see who unloads and puts away the groceries the fastest,” she challenged. “Uh.. no. I think Eira would kill me,” Ryan chuckled.
