---INTRO---
It had been 4 months since the XXX Summer Olympics in London, and things were finally starting to calm down for two-time gold medalist Nathan Adrian. No more TV appearances, no more autograph signings, and no more crazy fan girls screaming in his ear.
It wasn’t that he minded doing all those things, and he adored the fan base he had gotten, but to Nathan there was only one thing that really mattered to him, and that was Swimming.
Without all those other obligations he finally had the time to focus on getting better at his passion. His 3-hour 6AM swim workouts had started back, along with afternoon weight training, and his favorite, 3-mile evening runs.
Things had finally gotten back into the routine Nathan felt most comfortable with, and he was ecstatic. His mind was on the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio where he wanted to take home more than 2 golds. He wanted to own the Rio games, he wanted to step out from behind the shadows of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, he wanted to go down in history as the best Olympic Swimmer of all time, and nothing was going to get in his way.
Well, at least that’s what he thought…
---CHAPTER ONE---
“Nate! Let’s go dude!” Called out Nathan’s roommate Eric from downstairs. “We’re gonna’ be late!”
“Be down in just a second, almost done man!” Nathan responded as he looked at himself in the mirror.
His clothes were tattered and torn, blood stains were scattered all over his shirt and jeans, a piece of flesh hung off his neck, and blood oozed out of an open wound above his eyes that were completely white except for the dark speck of his pupil.
He smiled at his reflection, nodded his head in approval and ran down the stairs.
“So dude, what do you think?” Nathan asked smiling at Eric.
“Your teeth are way too white and clean to be a Zombie.”
Nathan scoffed, “I’m not gonna’ rot my teeth out for a Halloween costume.
“I’m just saying man,” Eric paused looking and Nathan up and down “If you don’t smile, you might have a chance of winning the costume contest.”
“Well, last time I checked wearing your Dad’s scrubs doesn’t count as a Halloween Costume.” Nathan retorted slapping his friend on his stomach with a laugh.
“Yeah yeah, you dickhead! Let’s just go before the girls get pissed at us, Jess said they’re already at Brennan’s.”
“Can’t keep Jess waiting, now can we?” Nathan said grabbing his car keys as the two headed out the door and into the car.
Tonight was the Annual Boo Bash Bar Crawl in Berkley. Nathan had been going the past 3 years, and knew he didn’t want to miss out on the fun. Drinking beers, people in costumes, and all to celebrate his favorite holiday, Halloween. This was one of the few exceptions he made to his rigorous swimming routine.
He was headed down to the crawl with Eric Godsmith, his roommate and one of his closest non-swimmer friends. He and Eric were both Pre-Med majors at Cal and had become close through classes. Nathan and Eric got along really well, and it was refreshing for Nathan to have a friend who didn’t always want to talk about swimming.
They were going to meet up with Eric’s on and off girlfriend, Jess and her friend Kendra. Nathan wasn’t the biggest fan of Jess, he thought she strung Eric along a little too much, and she liked to complain about pretty much everything, but she made Eric happy for the most part, so he put up with her. Kendra was the friend Jess was constantly trying to set Nathan up with. Nathan thought he had made it clear that he wasn’t interested in dating Kendra, but Jess was relentless.
There was nothing wrong with Kendra; she was a really sweet and pretty girl, with brunette hair and hazel eyes. But Nathan just wasn’t into dating anyone at the moment, he wanted to remain focused on his Swimming career, and didn’t think it would be fair to a nice girl like Kendra to string her along.
But at the same time, he was a guy, a guy with needs and Kendra usually didn’t mind fulfilling those needs after a night out drinking. Nathan would always feel guilty about sleeping with her and never giving her even the glimmering hope of a future relationship, but Kendra always seemed to make her way into Nathan’s bed after a few beers and shots.
Nathan and Eric pulled up to Brennan’s an old style Irish Pub and the starting point for the bar crawl. Entering the bar, Nathan scanned the crowded room taking in all the costumes; guys dressed as Batman and Bane, girls in barely-there military themed costumes, and even a few other zombies.
“There they are!” Eric said pointing out a scantily clad Jess and Kendra, dressed as a sexed up version of Bumblebee and Lady Bug.
“Finally you’re here!” Jess exclaimed pulling Eric in for a kiss
“Hey Jess, Kendra” Nathan said smiling at both of them “You ladies look great!”
“Thanks you’re not too bad yourself, Zombie Nathan.” Kendra said playfully.
Nathan smiled back “You ladies want some drinks?”
“Vodka-Cranberry” Jess retorted.
“Same for me.” Kendra cooed sweetly.
“Beer me bro!” Eric shouted as Nathan rolled his eyes and turned to squeeze in at the bar.
Nathan scanned the bar noticing a male bartender dressed as Captain America, and a female bartender with a furry animal hood on her head that looked like a Wolf. The fuzzy hood had pointed ears that came down into long flaps that draped over her body. The rest of her costume was relatively simple; she wore a black leotard with ripped up fishnets. He watched her as she bent over grabbing a beer out of the cooler and noticed a tail attached to the back of the leotard.
When she came back up she made eye contact with Nathan, as she handed the beer to another patron of the bar and took their money. Her face was intricately painted, with a black nose, and small specks and whiskers, very animalistic.
The female bartender looked back towards Nathan and began making her way over to him.
“What can I get for you Zom-Boy?”
“Two Stellas’ and two vodka-cranberries.” Nathan flashed his smile at her.
The girl began swiftly began scooping ice into glasses “You would make a much more convincing Zombie if you didn’t floss so much.”
“You’re not the first person to say that tonight.” Nathan chuckled.
She smiled up at him as she poured the vodka and cranberry juice into the glasses.
“You would make a much more convincing wolf if you didn’t floss so much.” Nathan said playfully as he watched her reach into the cooler grabbing the beers.
She popped the tops off the beers and placed them on the bar looking Nathan in the eyes “Fox.”
“What?” Nathan asked confused, staring into her blue eyes.
“I’m a Fox. My costume, I’m not a Wolf, I’m a Fox.”
“I guess I need to brush up on my canine identification skills.” Nathan joked.
She smiled a sarcastic smile back at him, “18 dollars.”
Nathan reached into his pocket grabbing out his wallet and handed her his card, “I’ll start a tab.”
She smiled, nodded and turned away going towards the computer. He watched her ass shake with the tail attached as she walked away.
A fox is right… he thought to himself.
Nathan grabbed up the drinks and turned around to head back to over to Eric, Jess and Kendra.
“Finally!” Jess bitched grabbing her and Kendra’s drinks, “I was so thirsty!”
Nathan handed Eric his beer and he raised it in the air, “Well cheers to another Boo Bash Bar Crawl!”
The four clinked their drinks together and shouted a “Cheers!” in unison.
And after 4 more bars, and about 8 more toast to the Annual Boo Bash Bar Crawl, Nathan’s night was one he couldn’t remember.
