"Don't," he mumbled, tensing at that oh so gentle touch. His lip was split, one eye bruised badly, and he was pretty sure he had taken damage to the ribs. Honestly, he was just glad it wasn't the side that had been pieced back together with metal. That was usually where his dad aimed when they crossed paths and Ryland managed to piss him off. "It's not as bad as it looks."

They had been driving back when the call had come in, forcing Ryland to pull over on the side of the highway to keep from crashing the damn truck. He couldn't have heard that right.
It had been months since Ryland had seen anyone from his family aside from Ev and it had been going well, all things considered. It was dangerous enough having taken Ev on the run with him, but Bren was a different can of worms entirely. There'd be no mercy if he got caught and Ryland knew it.
He knew there was no reason any of Lex's family would lie about something like and even less reason for Ev to, but he still had to see it with his own eyes.
Still, he leaned in the doorway for a moment, the anxiety of being there washing over him again like it was his first time walking through that door as he let his eyes adjust before his gaze landed on a familiar face he had thought he'd never see again.
"Holy shit, you're actually here."
