Mark pushes the office door opens and glances back at his teacher, a playful smile splayed across his face. There’s a hint of mischief hidden in the depths of his eyes but he turns quickly enough that she can’t catch it. She yells something about another night of detention later that week and Mark waves in acknowledgement. It’s only when the door shuts firmly behind him does he seem to relax, his body falls gracefully as the tension sweeps through his body and fades away just as easily. Mark slumps against the stone wall and peeks around the darkened corridor.
It’s later in the night, way past dinner time. And he’s not hungry, no instead he knows that there is something he needs to take care of immediately. Clutching his backpack to his chest, he unzips it a little and glances inside at his precious bundle, a bright white egg sits wrapped in his favorite scarf and held upright by a handful of textbooks. The lines of his face soften as he stares at the tiny bundle. It’s a soft noise in the distance that draws him out of his stupor though. Quickly he zips his bag back up before staring down the empty line of hallways that surround him. Gently tossing the bag over his shoulder, he slides on a mask of indifference before taking off down the corridor, his footsteps are light and quick.
