Veteran bench boss to become 21st head coach in franchise history
The Philadelphia Flyers have appointed Alain Vigneault as the 21st head coach in franchise history, signing him to a multi-year contract, according to Executive Vice President & General Manager Chuck Fletcher.
"We are extremely excited to have Alain join this franchise and lead our team behind the bench for many years to come," said Fletcher. "He brings a tremendous amount of success over an extended period of time that will prove valuable to our team to take the next steps in returning the winning culture to the Philadelphia Flyers organization."
"It is an honor to be selected as the next head coach of the Flyers," said Vigneault. "The history they have established and the passionate fan base has made this a first-class franchise. I am excited to work with Chuck, the talented group of players and prospects coming up through the system, in order to return Philadelphia to the top of the NHL landscape."
Assistant who replaced Boucher on March 1 among candidates
The Ottawa Senators are looking for a coach who can relate to the younger players on their roster, and Marc Crawford, who took over March 1 after Guy Boucher was fired, is a candidate.
"We have more players that we would call millennials. I'm not going to ask the coach if he knows what Fortnite is," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said Tuesday, referring to the popular video game. "But I think it's important to be able to relate to our players, and I think at the same time bring some kind of structure to our team that is needed, or a different type of structure that will allow us to have success and allow us to move this rebuild at quickly as possible."
The young core of the Senators includes 19-year-old forward Brady Tkachuk and 22-year-old forward Colin White, who each completed his rookie season. Thomas Chabot, a 22-year-old defenseman, completed his second season, as did 23-year-old defenseman Christian Jaros. The Senators acquired forward Anthony Duclair, who will be 24 in August, in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward Ryan Dzingel on Feb. 23, and acquired 19-year-old defenseman Erik Brannstrom, the No. 15 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, from the Vegas Golden Knights in a trade for forward Mark Stone on Feb. 25.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Barry Trotz became the fourth coach in NHL history to win 800 games, and the New York Islanders defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in a shootout at Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday.
Brock Nelson, Devon Toews, Anders Lee and Ross Johnston scored for New York (38-21-7), which moved into a tie with the Washington Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division and avoided a three-game losing streak.
Robin Lehner made 21 saves but left the game with 4:40 remaining in the third period after a collision with Brady Tkachuk. Thomas Greiss made three saves in relief.

John Hynes agreed to a multiyear contract extension as coach of the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.
Hynes is 125-122-38 in four seasons as Devils coach, including 15-17-7 this season. New Jersey qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season for the first time since 2012. The Devils were 44-29-9 for 97 points, a 27-point improvement from a last-place finish in the Eastern Conference in 2016-17, before a five-game loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference First Round.
GM will evaluate coach, possible moves over next five games
VOORHEES, N.J. -- Chuck Fletcher said he plans on using the upcoming five-game road trip to start evaluating potential moves as general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Fletcher who was hired Monday to replace Ron Hextall, said that includes coach Dave Hakstol and his staff.
The Flyers play the Columbus Blue Jackets at Wells Fargo Center on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSP, FS-O, NHL.TV) before beginning a five-game road trip with back-to-back games at the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday and the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. They then play the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks in a four-day span.
