The Famous Myth of the Brickworks Serpent By Kate Bash
This little known myth has fascinated Adelaideians and tourists to the state for generations going back a century. Fist some backstory for those who have been living under a brick this past century lol
Brickworks was built originally as a market in 1864 by Lord Mayor Thebarton who wanted a place for weekend markets (also FRIDAYS) that catered to everyday Aussies and not just the posh Farmers Market yuppys
Unfortunately, from day one the market was interrupted by tales of a Serpent that would steal novelties from the $2 stall (then known as the 2£ store) and tale them up the chimney, where he is reported to have lived. This story was known from the start, but it caused widespread panics in 1897, 1934, 1933, 1964 the (centennial year of the Brickworks market!) 1983 and 1997, which led to several stall holders packing up and leaving the markets On The Spot. No one knows whether these stallholders saw the serpent, or if (a possibly scarier thought) they were overcome by the very fear of the beast itself as if it was 'so potent as an idea that it had no cause to exist in the physical realm'*
One thing is for certain: the Serpent retains its hold on the psyche and the snake-shaped toys that can be found in the Newspower newsagent that is next to the Coles at the snazzy revamped brickworks. To this day they are stocked and each week more are stolen than sold. Stolen? Or purloined by the Serpent?

If you’re from Adelaide.
It's actually rather hard for me, as a country kid who never actually got to see it, to believe that we once had a world-class event like the Formula 1 right here in Adelaide. On our streets. That I've driven on.
(V8 Supercars don't count - that's a domestic competition. Formula 1 is something that tours to classic, iconic places like Silverstone and Monaco. The supercars only go to dumpy suburban racetracks like Hidden Valley and Bathurst.)
