Saariaho - Nocturne for solo violin (1994)
A short but gorgeous piece that makes full use of the violin's registers and timbres. It was written in memory of Witold Lutosławski, and it is based off themes and ideas that Saariaho explored in her violin concerto that she was writing around the same time. Moments feel like wind over a bottleneck, or insects chirping and clicking. The texture shifts from being delicate and songlike, to being very harsh and guttural. There's a hint of 'lyrical' writing at points, harkening back to the Italianate melodies from the genre's early works. The sense of melody comes and goes, giving the illusion of a song. The density of some of the textures makes it surprising to remember that this is one stringed instrument, and not several.

L’amour de loin (Helsinki, 2004): Reactions, Part II
the orchestral-warm-up-music is back and I dig it
“I HAVE ALREADY FUCKING TOLD YOU TOO MANY TIMES PLEASE STOP ASKING ME”
Jaufré, the trouser mezzo has valid advice perhaps you should listen
at least you can acknowledge it
“I ASKED YOU TO BE MY WINGMAN NOT TO REVEAL MY MOST INNER FEELINGS TO HER”
“YOU ARE THE WORST WINGMAN OF ALL TIME”
Area Bass-Baritone Is Severely PO’d
fellas???
coooooooooooooooooooooooool
she’s singing his song
this sounds really awesome (the clapping music!)
connection to home
music is truly a great connector
she’s okay with not meeting him
seriously this boat is amazing can I have it please
so pretty
not ominous at all
we’re goin’ on a trip in our favorite glowy ship, sailin’ on the sea, to Tripoli!
I think you’re delirious
okay I assume this is delirium
seriously I think this Pilgrim has a Thing for Jaufré
anyway
you’re a bass-baritone what are the chances of that
these interludes are cool
there’s no instruction manual for something like this
oh buddy
he deserves better
this hurts
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
they’re so great together
NO HE’S DEAD :(
oh honey :(
THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT
she’s having a crisis someone help her
chorus, you are NOT HELPING
NO CLÉMENCE YOU ARE AMAZING AND I LOVE YOU
YES YOU DO
this is so cool
l’amour de loin...but for whom?
she deserved so much better and also this was unexpectedly moving. like??? this actually hurt a LOT???
also you know it’s good when the audience sits in absolute silence for about THIRTY SECONDS after the opera is actually over
L’amour de loin (Helsinki, 2004): Reactions, Part I
Today, we hit a milestone: my FIFTIETH new-to-me opera so far in 2021!
(Note: this was originally going to be the Met 2016 production, but this has English subs.)
this looks and sounds cool
GERALD FINLEY LADS (also this kinda sounds like the orchestra when it off-the-cuff warms up before a show)
and you have learned to make me happy just by singing
seriously the LOOK
he just has such a great stage personality I love him
l’amour de loin indeed
sir, Build-A-Girl is not a real store
reality check
every opera can be made better with two things: a trouser role and a glowy boat
“hey I have the perfect girl for you”
“hold up I need my AURA of MYSTERY”
seriously this is cool
it sounds like being in a forest with birds and a stream
and on the other side of the sea/stage... (and yes, there is actual water onstage)
this duet is very intriguing
she wants out
the Pilgrim has the tea
if you are in an opera, do NOT get involved with a troubadour
when you talk about yourself in the third person
“THIS DUDE HAS NEVER EVEN MET ME WTF IS THIS”
and how do you think that’s gonna go
alright then
shiny!!!
Dawn Upshaw is just lovely
honey are you okay
such an intriguing score!
Chaque édition du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence voit naître une création mondiale. En 2021, nous découvrons ainsi "Innocence", un opéra de Kaij
