Vegan Sabich Sandwich
As far as I can tell, as an non-Middle Easterner, the debate over "Israeli cuisine" goes a bit like this:
Israeli: ah, I think I'd like to open up a restaurant serving the dishes I grew up eating, you know, falafel, hummus....
Palestinian/Lebanese/Jordanian/Syrian: CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! IMPERIALISM! You're taking our cuisine and calling it your own!
Israeli:...I never said falafel or hummus are exclusively Israeli, but Jews of the Levant have been eating them for centuries before there was an Israel, and my family has been eating them since we became Israeli 3 generations ago, so I feel entitled to claim them as part of Israeli cuisine. Like, if a Syrian eats a falafel, a Lebanese or a Palestinian isn't going to call that cultural appropriation, right?
P/L/J/S: No of course not, that's totally different!
Israeli: Well, how about this: since you all seem to think these food are pan-Middle Eastern, why don't I just call my restaurant "Middle Eastern" or "Levantine" or whatever to avoid this headache.
P/L/J/S: Hah! Look at the cultural appropriator trying to cover up their cultural appropriation!
Israeli: What...no, that's not what I'm trying to do....agh, I'll just serve sabich and shakshuka
P/L/J/S: CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! You're still stealing traditional Palestinian cuisine
Israeli: Shakshuka is Algerian and Sabich is Iraqi, specifically Iraqi Jewish, both of them were brought here specifically by Jews after being ethnically cleansed, what the fuck are you even talking about?
