Day 7 - April 21st - So Here We Are...
With each day that had passed, Aubrie felt the fear of the situation that they were in. Every day she lived in a constant fear of hearing the names of her family members. People in her group had gone missing, and others had died. She was losing the only family that she had left around her, and because of this she could only cling to the fact that Micah, Jameson, and Micah's daughter were still alive out there somewhere.
Thanks to the slowly dwindling members of their group, Aubrie was out on her shift at the fence. She could hear the sounds of the zombies, it was louder than she remembered. She glanced around at the others at the fence, and then glanced at the fence again. It was moving. She could have sworn that she had just seen it move. That couldn't be good, in fact, that had to be an incredibly bad sign.
"Guys..." She croaked, her voice catching in her throat due to the fact that fear had gripped her.
Nobody heard her, and before she knew it the barrier was caving in. Zombies began to pour in, and Aubrie was about to take off, and run, but her eyes caught something that took her breath away. No... oh, God, no!
Even if she had wanted to run, she wouldn't be able to. Not with that familiar head of hair moving directly at her. "Callum... Callum.. no..." She cried out.
Her brother, a zombie, and he was headed directly at her. Part of her brain was screaming at her to move, but she couldn't. Her feet seemed to be weighted down like cement had sealed them to the spot she stood now. Tears were pooling up in her eyes, and ran down her face, as the fear caused tremors to spread through her body.
A moment that surely only took seconds, seemed to feel as though they spanned hours. Aubrie remembered the last time that she had seen Callum, he had ruffled her hair, and exclaimed how proud he was of her and how she had been doing in school. He was proud that she had decided to take a different path from the rest of the family while not completely turning her back on the medical field that their whole family had been raised in. She could still hear the thick Scottish accented voice calling her name, and speaking to her. Aubrie could still remember the laugh that she adored.
The man that she admired most, the man who played with her, and never seemed to be embarrassed to spend time with her no matter what friends he was with was now coming at her, and not to save her. His beautiful eyes were not the eyes she'd grown accustomed to, the eerie glowing eyes taking the place of the familiar eyes she loved. Somehow, through the glowing, they were completely dead, and unseeing.
"Callum... it's me... it's me... please!" She begged.
He was upon her in moments, and as she tried to keep him at arms length, she cried out. Her strength was nothing to this undead monster. This was not her brother. This was not the Callum she grew up with. As he was joined by a group of other zombies, searing pain took over, and her screams tore out through the night.
Now, all she could pray for was a swift death. She'd frozen in a time where she needed to have courage. Aubrie was not made for this world. She realized that she was too gentle, too emotional, too caring. She clung to all of the beauty, hope, and potential happiness, and she couldn't change in time to survive the terror that surrounded them. God had given her a test, and she had failed. It was the first test she had ever failed in her life, and now it was the last.
