Arianna would admit, she was nervous. This was bigger than she’d anticipated, this was scarier than she’d thought. And she’d made it through so much shit. But this... it baffled her mind. She might be a genius, but she liked to have rules, have structure. 

Okay, breath, Ari. You can do this.

She walked into the Special Ops wing, her eyes scanning the various screens and cubicles. She knew who she was looking for, and found him with only a few questions.

“Agent Ellis?”

She’s never had to do this before. It’s never been her job, to walk up to an apartment door and knock. 

She can barely get out the words, the news tangled in her throat and threatening to strangle her.

She knows she needs to visit another house, another state, another parent, but she can’t. She hasn’t cried since the moment her phone had fallen on her desk.

She will finish this.

She leaves a brother sobbing, and she can’t bring herself to stay, to comfort him. She leaves her card, and walks away. He’s agreed to tell his parents, it saves her the effort. She’s not sure she can do it, say the words again.

She hates that she can’t even say how he’d died. It’s all covered in red tape and black marker and the only reason she knows is because she has to, to put all the information together, to do her job.

Fuck her job.

She burns the clothes she wears, never wants to have to give that talk again.

She’s not sure why she’s searching for him. She’s read the reports. She’s read the files. She’s talked to Clay. She’s talked to Sterling. She’s nervous about him, she had no idea what his powers do, she doesn’t know what will happen. But she’s curious, she wants to know why Clay looks so fucking smitten, why Sterling looks so concerned.

She wants to meet the man who means so much to the people around her, and figure out why she’s protecting him. She wants understand what the hell is going on.

She walks into the Communications sector, her eyes scanning the area. “Agent Hartell?”

“Hey! You reached Clay! Probably out doing something awesome though. It would be WEISS of to leave me a message so I can get back at you... Get it? WEISS. That's me. That's my name. LEAVEAMESSAGE!”

Her fingers hit the end call button, shaking and a sinking feeling in her gut. She’d been on edge since Sterling asked if she’d seen him.

She’s in a new office, one at the other base, and she has a phone and she’s working on getting all the information together, everything that Sterling had sent, everything that she has, everything there is to bring this son of a bitch down.

She calls again.

“Hey! You reached Clay! Probably out --”

Arianna was trying to get everything to make sense. The data from the keylogger, the recordings and transcripts. She printed everything out, Sterling’s comment about electronics making her more paranoid than usual. She printed out the transcripts and she saved everything to a flashdrive.

She had a feeling she wouldn’t be home until late, and sent a text to Scott saying such. Scott and Branna could have a fun night without her.

And then the lights went out, and she froze, fear turning her blood to ice. This wasn’t normal. This wasn’t average. This wasn’t.... oh god, they were under attack. She had to make sure her agents were okay. She had protocol to follow.

Protocol. There was protocol for this. She relaxed minutely.

She stepped out of her office, checking in on the agents that were still there. There were only two other agents, and she ushered them into her office, setting up a space with glow-sticks and emergency blankets and anything they might need to hole up for a while.

She needed to figure out what was happening.
