darren: "The doctor explained everything to me... I... I can't just let you go like this. I need you."
Matilda held Darren’s hand as he quickly moved back beside her. There were doctors and nurses fussing about all around them, rushing around and barking orders at one another, but all she could focus on was him. She didn’t feel anymore pains from labor nor pay much attention to the cold that began to take over her entire being. All she could see was him, the desperate and fearful look in his eyes that shined from the tears that gathered there. She didn’t need to hear Darren’s words to know what was going on; she could sense it. She could tell from the way the doctor began to work hastily and with determination, how the nurses looked among one another, and in her own body. She felt pale and weaker than she had with Oliver. This birth was not going without complication and she knew exactly what was going to happen.
The funny thing was, she didn’t even feel a sense of panic or fear. She felt more sad than anything. Maybe she was going into shock, but all she could think in that moment was how she wished she got to hold Oliver one last time and how she wished she’d be able to hear her daughter’s first laugh. Mostly she wished that she wouldn’t be leaving Darren all alone. He had already lost so much and she hated to think of what would happen to him once she was gone. She needed him to be strong though. Not only for himself but for their children too; Oliver and their daughter. Their daughter— Matilda knew she would do anything for her children, and if that meant giving her own life up so that her daughter could come into the world then it was something she’d die proudly for. She just needed Darren to be there for them. For her.
“They need you.” She said softly, her voice barely a whisper. She gazed up at his face, taking in his features, memorizing him. She thought back to all the years they had together, of how truly blessed she had felt to love and be loved by someone as wonderful as Darren. She thought about how perfect a father he had been to Oliver up to this point and how she knew he’d take care of this little girl too, protect her and love her enough for the both of them. She was glad that he was the one who would get to raise them and watch them grow and knew that he would always let them know just how much Matilda loved them.
She felt tears start to form in her eyes as she smiled softly at Darren. There was no one else in the room with them in that moment; just her and him and the lifetime of memories they had made together. “I love you.” She said, putting all of her into the words, knowing it was the very last time she got to say them.
