overcoming the pop music plague of contemporary society, whilst simultaneously being successful and keeping an individual identity, has often been the most problematic issue for many 20th and 21st century artists. one act, however, that has been largely successful in doing this, is elbow.

Whilst they have had a few major hits, notably “one day like this”, their lesser known songs often go relatively unnoticed to the masses. “my sad captains” is one of these, and is a requiem for the hedonistic years of one’s life. it’s message should not be overlooked. it is a song that leaves your soul feeling enriched with the memory of moments in the past, and urges you to appreciate every little moment.

Because one day we will all look back on the brief times we spent with our “sad captains”, and know we should have valued them more.
