Thoughts on the Kushiel-verse - both in general, and also, do you think it needed anything more? I recently posted an idea I wrote up ages ago for it on my AO3 account, so it's been in my thoughts a lot.

A lot of my Kushiel opinions are lost to the mists of time, but here’s what I got of off the top of my head:

I loved that sexual violence was blasphemy to the gods, both in universe and as a meta statement of intent.

I loved the world building of Terre d’Ange. I did not need the backpacker’s guide to the rest of the goddamned planet. To be fair, this isn’t just a Kushiel thing, Temeraire suffered under it too. 

Given how much of the plot hinged on Phedre’s relationship with Melisande the amount of page time and development it got in comparison to Phedre and Joscelin was kind of absurd.

The worst example of this prioritising women’s relationships with men over other women was Moirin/Jehanne and Moirin/Bao. Why was Bao the endgame love interest of that trilogy? Why?

Imriel was a wonderfully realised character, and it is not the fault of the second trilogy that I care not a whit for sad boys being whumped.

Things I would have liked more of, in canon or fandom: Ysandre de la Courcel, Sidonie sans Imriel, Phedre/Nicola, Sidonie/Amarante, and Moirin/Jehanne.

Recently found your blog and fics and absolutely loving them, thank you! For the Modulus-verse - what's Shujiao's reaction when she's sitting down one late night, trying to balance the business books, and then her (girl?)friend who had no sense of business value until Shujiao taught them (but used to have to try and balance the budget of a country perpetually at war) pops in, takes one look at it, and fixes it all in 5 minutes?

Incredulous confusion.

“H-how did you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Do what? Do what? Balance that, that’s what!”

“I do know how to do math, Shujiao. I’m not an idiot.”

“That involved three marginal tax rates and five different currency exchanges!”

“...so?”

“...”

“...”

“...why are you like this?”

And continuing today: 14, 17, 18. Also, I wrote a short piece on how the show decided to handle Jon Snow's parentage on AO3 if you're interested.

I’m really snagged on the annulment. I’m okay with the teleportation, because plot momentum. I can live with never seeing Ellaria again, because the Dornish plot has been a write off since S4, so whatever. I usually don’t mind them giving Jon Snow ALL THE CHEAT CODES, because I like Jon Snow. What I am not here for is Jon Targaryen, suddenly legitimate king of everything. I think the annulment might be the ass pull that broke the camel’s back.

17. In your opinion, what’s your most overrated fic?

It’s maybe because I’m iffy that my most popular Merlin fic on A03 is one where I don’t make it clear that Merlin (the character) is THE WORST, but I would be perfectly happy if I never got another kudo on Were You Looking For A Lost Magical Kingdom In That Wardrobe.

18. What’s your most underrated fic?

With the caveats that I know I probably get more than my fair share of attention, fic-wise, and that I like Dorne more than most people like Dorne, The Sun's Daughter

4. In your opinion and without looking at any numbers, what’s your most popular fic?

If I have a fandom claim to fame, then it’s as the girl who wrote The Care and Feeding of Tiny Humans (and slightly larger Time Lords), and I’m okay with that.

5. Is there any fic that makes you super happy to reread and remember you wrote that?

Turn Around Three Times Before Dying, Sameen Shaw and an outraged ocelot, that’s what fandom’s for.

7. What’s the fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?

The Sisters Black, which has been a sad little one work series since 2014. 

I even know what’s meant to happen in part ii, which features Ygritte, Asha/Alysane, and comrades-in-arms sex.

I think that even though Carey is gay and (obviously) supports it, she may have (subconsciously) pandered to the straight majority of readers for her most popular series (in her less popular books, gay relationships are endgame). I don't blame her, but she could have at least included Amarante as Sidonie's official consort. Imri is cute and a great character, but yeah, if he was less mopey and more like Melisande I would have cared for him more More Sidonie more Melisande More Nicola (part 2/2)

I totally agree about Carey, but I also think that’s part of why the series feels prematurely aged. 

( Speaking of Carey’s other series, I’ll just stick in a wholehearted rec for Santa Olivia, the most delightfully tropey duology about lesbian werewolves and the girls who love them that you will ever come across.)

4. Role Reversal AU - Elia Martell/Lyanna Stark - I think this could be awesome, however you do it.

Had A Dream I Was The Queen (woke up, still the queen) (Lyanna/Elia, 7.5k, and written using the copious free time I’ve created by no longer watching the news or reading the papers)

Rhaegar marries Lyanna Stark, and runs away with Elia Martell

28. Something You’ve Thought of That I Haven’t (give details) - I will keep pounding this until you tell me no - Historical AU, with Tyene as a novitiate nun and Arianne thinking she can be La Maupin... only to discover she's good, but not that good (as always, Tyene pulls through in the end)

I love this idea, but suspect I might be Too Catholic (of the lapsed and atheist variety, but still...) to write femslash involving even one nun. I’ll give it a shot, and stop if I feel the flames on the back of my neck.
