Sashie, Ed. Takahama Kyoshi, 1911.
A collection of illustrated prints by Hototogisu artists
I spent the day with my friend and her kids. Here’s a sampling of some of the questions her 6 year old asked me.
Can you believe I’m the only one in the family that made Old Mill? Did you see me when I ran? Did you see me when I kicked the ball? Did you see my new bow? Do you know how old Geno is? Are you coming to my house? Can I ride in your car? Did you know I can use my tummy as a drum? Did you know sometimes I smell my “armpicks”? Do you have a husband? Do you have kids? Do you teach second grade again? What do your students call you? Is that really your last name? Did you know we have another house? Do you like my dog Oreo? Did you know I like Oreos the most in my family? Can you make me a taco? Can you make me another taco? Do you know that shin guards make your legs feel warm? Do you know why my shirt feels so smooth? Do you like my unicorn pants? Are those skinny jeans? Do you wish you had TwinkleToes shoes too? Did you see my shoes light up? Can you see if they have fun dip? Can we pet the baby alpaca? Did you see that baby turtle? Will a pig make my hand slobbery? Can you carry me? Can I carry you? Do you want another Twizzler? You really like Twizzlers don’t you? Can we go on the hay ride? Can you really carry me now? Do you know my Lita? What did Lita look like when she was little? What was her last name? What was her mom’s name? Did she have a boyfriend in high school? Why do they play sad music on Teen Mom? Why is she doing that? Where is she going? Why is Sophia so strange? Do you want to be on Teen Mom? Can we get sunglasses like that? Where’s Nora? Can we call Nora? Do you have Snapchat on your phone? Would you get mad if I licked your neck? Do you like crispy Snickers? Did you know Isaac can’t use his phone anymore because he got in trouble? Did you know Iyari said the F word one time? Do you know how to spell the F word? What does it feel like when Itzel drools all over you? What does this word say? Where is my slinky? Remember when I fell down the stairs? Do you know my Tia Crystal’s eyes are big? Can you spend the night? Do you want the tour? When the new house is finished then can you spend the night? Will you marry me, my lady?

Beach Day
My family has a camper in Wilmington at a "resort". It's not a resort. Trust me. It's nice though. The camper is a decent size and there a screened in porch and outside deck. There are three small lakes where you can swim, fish and use small boats. Very peaceful. My parents would generally go every weekend in the summer, but my dad hasn't made it there too much this year for obvious reasons. He still goes to do maintenance stuff but it's been hard. My friend first brought her boys out like four-ish years ago. They love coming to "Sara's beach" and were begging for this year's trip. We planned for today. My friend has four kids: ages 2, 4, 8 and 10. With a frantic phone call yesterday, I knew the boys wouldn't be coming. Supermom thought the had camp next weekend but surprise! They had to be there yesterday. It was pretty hilarious. So it was looking like it'd just be the girls. On Wednesdays this summer, I've been hanging out for Oma Days with some family friends. Laurie was one of my mom's best friends and I grew up with her four girls. We used to spend every Wednesday for like five straight summers at the roller rink because their church gave summer passes. Now I hang with them and their kids. There are 9 grand kids. Well, 9 and 8/9 since a new one is due within a month. You may have noticed my park/zoo pics with them. This week, I mentioned to Laurie that I'd be going to the lake to meet my friend and her kids. Since she's pretty close, I told her if she was up to it, I'd get her the address and she was free to visit for a bit. One of the girls lives with her so I mentioned to her too since her kids are 1 and 3. They decided to take the ride and the kids had a blast. They had the lake to themselves and even though we were chilly in the sand, the water was pretty warm. And of course by the time we were packing up, the sun finally came out. Obviously, when you hang out with four kids under 4, you get some gems.. Hayley: Help me! I'm floating away! Any adult: Stand up! *Hayley stands up and is barely knee deep* Saihan: *points to vanilla wafers* Can I have some Tuesday cookies? Me: What's a Tuesday cookie? Saihan: We eat those cookies at Miss Nikki's on Tuesdays. Baby Kye loved the sand. Walking in it. Falling in it. Rolling in it. Eating it.. Hayley, who had climbed into the golf cart without anyone knowing: Is someone gonna drive me or what? Saihan: Mommy, can I use your towel? Connie: Why? You have your princess one right there. Saihan: But that thing is soakin' wet! Kye repeatedly emptied the snack bin and would climb into it head first. I think it's because it's tin so when he'd make noises, he'd get feedback. Iyari would not take more than three steps off the beach mat. If she hadn't peed herself, she'd have been the only one to stay dry all day. Kye and Iyari are the same weight and wear the same size clothes but Kye is a year younger. [Hayley's nickname is Fancy] Saihan: You other name is Fancypants? *when changing out of swimsuits before we left* Hayley: The sand likes me. Me: How do you know? Hayley: Because it went in my butt. Saihan, right when someone passed on their golf cart: Shake your naked butt, Iyari! How do people not like kids?

How do they see themselves 5 years from today?
He sees himself still working at the station in some capacity – though, in the headcanon that follows the shows continuity, he begins to ease back from his position as Lin's captain, and take on more responsibilty at Beifong Metalbending Academy, eventually leaving the force entirely. He does this because of his health, and because he eventually comes to realize that he can't ignore the damage done to his lungs, and that he has to make adjustments for it in his life.
Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t workout?
He plans to be with Lin. To be helping the city in whatever capacity he can. Beyond that... He doesn't have any eleborate dreams or fantasies of how he wanted his life to turn out – he'd never had the chance for daydreaming as a child, and he has no patience for it now. The only real plan he has is a promise, to Lin, and her promise to him, that if they both survived what happened with the Equalists, they would look into adoption one day.
What is their biggest regret?
His biggest regret is not going back to see his mother before she passed; she asked for him, and he refused to go. He knows, logically, that he made the right decision, and that he owes her nothing, but... deep down, a part of him will always think that it was his fault that she never loved him, and that he could have done something if he'd tried. That he'd deserved what she'd done to him.
Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy?
Lin Beifong, since always. When he was a child, Tenzin, but now? Up until their death, Tarrlok and Amon, and even though they're gone, he harbors extreme loathing and hatred towards them both, and I doubt that will ever fade.
Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (eg The house is on fire! What do they do?)
He doesn't overreact in a crisis- he keeps his temper, usually, and doesn't lose it until after the crisis has passed, and its safe to let out his emotions. If he's afraid, he won't show it outwardly to anyone but a select few, and he can work through his fear, and has had to, on several occasions.
Reaction to sudden intrapersonal disaster (eg close family member suddenly dies)
It depends on the person who died. When his father died, he was disappointed, and angry, because the man had been alive all this time and never tried to come see him, to rescue him when he needed it. When his mother died, he felt guilt and shame for being glad she was dead, because she'd tormented him for most of his life. When Sokka died, he actually cried, and felt true grief – he'd been the only father figure Saikhan had ever known. In general, however, he doesn't show his grief, his sorrow- he hides it well, and only comes out if he drinks at some point after the event.
