he stood some distance away from her ,     staring vacantly over the skybridge ,     overlooking the eastern section of the royal palace courtyard .     he could only make out the shapes of things   -   trees ,     stone prisms ,     an expanse of cleanly cut grass that looked in the low light like lake water .     the earth below them was still ; twilight had brought with it a harmonious silence that not even the chirping of crickets challenged .

 ALMOST   DYING   IS   ALWAYS     a   little   strange.   one   moment   you’re   standing   and   the   next   you’re   down,   and   it’s   not   even   the   pain   that’s   the   worst   of   it,   not   really,   but   the   gnawing,   howling   disappointment.   there’s   always   more   to   do,   more   to   see,   things   left   unsaid,   or   things   said   without   meaning   to.   then   all   that   goes   away,   just   like   that.   but   having   travelled   with   a   group   for   so   long   has   taught   jester   that   not   everyone   can   let   it   go   just   as   easily.   maybe   she   can’t   either,   but   she’s   awfully   good   at   pretending   anyway,   and   that’s   kinda   the   same   thing   from   a   certain   angle.   the   world   is   unkind   even   to   girls   who   want   to   fix   it     ;     especially   to   them.   her   chest   still   hurts,   and   she   knows   there   are   going   to   be   so   many   bruises   come   morning,   but   she   keeps   her   smile   light,   her   demeanour   jovial.         ❝     hey   so,   i   totally   don’t   wanna   pry   or   anything,   but     ...     i   want   you   to   know   that   i’m   here   to   listen,   if   maybe   you   want   someone   to   talk   to,   maybe.     ❞
