With the release of Big Deal's last album, June Gloom, the duo of KC Underwood and Alice Costelloe had cemented a reputation for a big, arena rock sound -- big, stomping drums, chiming guitars, playful melodies and an urgent, plaintive swoon. However, "Always Boys," the first single off the band's forthcoming Sakura EP seems to capture a band experimenting with their sound a bit. Yes, their sound still feels as though it's swooning but there's more nuance to the material -- the song manages to be comprised of two distinct but moody sections: a slow-burning section of Costelloe's vocals and acoustic guitar, followed by big arena rock-friendly guitar chords before ending as quietly as the song began. It shows that the band can manage hushed introspection equally as they can manage sprawling, swooning power pop -- and in a rather deft manner.
