Herc & Xena character cards 7/?
It's been a long time since Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess were on the air in the 90s. But for those of us who remember those shows fondly because we watched them back then, I was just thinking about something.
Remember when they were talking very seriously about doing a reboot of Xena? A lot of people were worried about how they would handle it in this more modern era, because a lot of things have changed since then. We wondered if Xena and Gabrielle could be out lesbians with each other rather than subtext (sometimes VERY overt subtext). We wondered who they would get to play the characters we loved so much and who we were very protective of. We wondered if Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor would appear. Some people didn't think the show could work without them as the main characters, others just wanted cameos or recurring side characters for them.
I worried about all of those same things, too.
However.
I wanted to know who they were going to get to play Autolycus. I just couldn't see anyone but Bruce Campbell playing the character, but I sincerely doubted they would have him reprise the role (though I wouldn't be shocked if he would do it if they asked him to). He was absolutely perfect for that role, amazing casting choice.
But now...recently, I've realized that I do think there is ONE person who would be perfect to fill that role if they ever decided to reboot either show and make a serious attempt at making it good rather than a nostalgic cash grab.
Jacques Ze Whipper.
Tell me I'm wrong! I'll be the first to say that I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't want the role, but I am just saying if I had my choice it'd be him.
People who are OG fans of the shows, tell me you couldn't see it. I really think he'd be perfect. He's the only other one I can see. Other people might have other picks and that's fine, but this is my ONE choice for a new Autolycus.
Now, Salmoneus on the other hand...I don't know, I don't think I've got anyone that I think could fill his shoes yet (and I was so sad when the actor, Robert Trebor, passed away last year). But you can't have Autolycus without Salmoneus! I don't care what anyone says, I am RIGHT about that.
And yes, there were issues with the character of Salmoneus. But those issues can be removed if we're going to remake/reboot the show with new actors and new writers. We don't have to throw him away. But I don't know who I could see playing him.
Our dear Salmoneus, Robert Trebor has passed away 😞 Rest in peace to our favorite clever merchant. I’ll be watching the Xena episodes he was in this weekend in his honor.
