Taking a break to make a wire saw. I just got a piece of diamond-coated wire (it's cheaper than you'd think!) that I'm excited to use to try to cut jasper. Precision is not a part of my plans for this. It will have a bit of a dog-leg and I think that's okay. I even decided to leave the bark on these sticks. I wonder if I'm getting sucked into a forest goblin aesthetic.

Wow, it's been a long time since I got much done. I'm finally building the lathe though!
Here's the little frame I made to hold the motor. I had it in a really rough box before but it sounded like a death machine. I don't think I kept any pictures. This time it's padded with the insole of an old discarded shoe. I didn't want to, but I ended up having the pulleys 3D-printed. It seemed like the only way to get a uniform radius given that I only have hand tools and a power drill ATM, and I really want to minimize vibration. Vibration = noise = potentially angry neighbors + bad time for my own ears.
The frame and base are made from pallet wood that a large appliance was shipped with. This is my first time making wood joinery and I don't even know what this kind of joint is called. Chiseling out the inside felt quite satisfying though, and this larger board has a nice cedar smell.
I'm also building a little cover for the motor to keep anybody using the lathe from accidentally touching a live wire. IMO, it doesn't matter how smart you are, anyone can absentmindedly put their hand somewhere it doesn't belong. So it makes sense to minimize the surface area of things that can hurt you on contact. These are the cheapest poplar boards I could get from Home Depot because they don't need to be strong.
