Fate - You and Sam were always meant to find each other.
You look stunning in pregnancy. Seven months in and Sam can’t keep his hands or his mouth off you. It’s creating quite the problem this morning as he steps out of the shower because your standing in front of the mirror wearing nothing but a white maternity bra and panties.
“I look like a balloon.” You say, applying cocoa butter to your stretchmarks. Your body shape changing, you expected, this heinous little marks that are blossoming across your skin are something you didn’t plan for.
“You do not look like a balloon.” Sam protests, offended by the notion. He comes to stand behind you, his bare chest against your back as he cradles your stomach between his palms. “You look like a goddess, one who is bringing new life into the world.”
“Who knew you’d have such a breeding kink?” You murmur because you can already feel his enthusiasm straining against the white towel that’s slung low over his hips.
“It’s not a breeding kink.” He mumbles as he buries his face into the curve of your throat. “It’s a ‘my wife and I created something wonderful’ kink.”
“Ex-wife.” You remind him and he huffs because the term irks him even if it is just semantics.
“It’s bothering you huh?” He whispers, his eyes meeting yours in the mirror as he draws you closer, tucking you in against him.
“Being married to you, it’s important to me.” You tell him as you settle back against his chest. “It’s important to her too, I can feel it.”
“Ok then.” He says, his lips brushing over your temple. “Let’s do it. If that’s what my baby wants, that’s what she’ll get.”
“But what about what you want?” You say turning to face him. “I don’t want you to commit to me like that if it’s something you’re not ready for.”
“Elle honey.” Sam says taking your hands and guiding them around his neck. “We should never have got divorced in the first place. I wanted to take it back the moment I signed those papers. The two of us fixing that, nothing would make me happier.”
“Then let’s elope.” You say, raising up on tiptoes to kiss him. “Let’s disappear for the weekend and come back married.”
“That really will give my residents something to talk about.” Sam chuckles as he uses his body to walk you back towards the bed. “Do you still have your ring?”
“In my jewellery box.” You tell him as he sits you down on the edge of the bed. Your fingers hook on the slender silver chain around his throat, tugging him closer. “And obviously you still have yours. All we need is a couple of witnesses.”
“I can handle that, Dean and Isobel are always looking for something to do on the weekends.” Sam submits, his forehead coming to rest on yours. “Are we really doing this?”
“Yea Sam.” You smile as you look into your husband’s eyes. “We really are.”

Oooh! How would the Abrams be celebrating little miss’s first holidays?
Sam immerses himself in the holiday completely with Arabelle in the picture. The holiday period is booked off months in advance and there will be absolutely no infringements on it.
Despite the fact she’s barely 9 months old at this point, he convinces Elle to take her to see Santa so he can get a picture. Arabelle fucking hates it because Santa isn’t her Papa, she absolutely howls, fist clamping on the beard and yanking it down which makes the other kids in the queue cry. It’s a disaster which makes Sam feel a little disheartened until Elle brings her by the toy drive when he’s playing Santa, her little eyes light up and she’s reaching for him. Dean Archer snaps a picture of the three of them together and it lives on Sam’s desk for the rest of the year.
As the holiday approaches the three of them decide to take a trip up Canada to see Lucy and her new partner. Sam loves having all of his girls together in one place and Lucy adores her new baby sister. They have a wonderful time and Sam returns to Chicago Med happier than ever, which makes his interns deeply unsettled because they aren’t used to it.

The baby keeps taking off her socks, Sam has forgotten about this stage of her development. The throwing and retrieving part. His daughter thinks it’s a fabulous game and Sam plays into it because it brings him so much joy to see her little face light up.
“Ah I remember the fetch phase.” Dean Archer says when he opens the door to the doctor’s lounge and steps inside. “I used to spend hours going back and forth with Sean until he fell asleep with the sock in his hand.”
“I think she’s starting to get there.” Sam says as he puts the sock back on Arabelle’s foot for the fiftieth time. She’s starting to settle into the cushioning of her stroller. Her movements are becoming less coordinated, her eye lids fluttering closed despite the fact she’s struggling to keep them open. She always does this, fights sleep. It’s like the world outside is too exciting for her and she doesn’t want to be away from it for a single second. “Elle’s just finishing up an appointment with a client, I thought I’d bring by the baby for lunch but it looks like this little one is going to be fast asleep by the time mommy catches up with us.”
“It suits you, you know?” Dean says with a smile watching Sam interact with the baby. “Being a father again.”
“Don’t tell me it’s making you broody.” Sam says as he puts the other sock back on Arabelle’s foot. “Geriatric parenthood is not for the faint of heart.”
“No, noooo.” Dean says rubbing his palm over the back of his neck. “That ship has long set sail. Maybe if we’d met earlier…”
He trails off then because that thought has been on his mind a lot recently, what his life would have been like if him and Isobel had met after his divorce. He wonders if she would have seen what was going on with Sean, if they would have had a couple of kids of their own by now. If he’d have been a different, kinder person in the years that followed instead of the bitter man he’d become for over a decade.
“I used to think the same thing about Elle.” Sam tells Dean as he manoeuvres the stroller into the corner where it’s less stimulating for small children who are almost falling asleep. “It was my only regret when it came to her, that it wasn’t an option but life found away and now we have this little one.”
“And now your family’s complete.” Dean remarks as Sam rearranges the baby blanket around his daughter.
“Yes.” Sam smiles as he chucks Arabelle under the chin. “Yes, it certainly is.”

Fate - You and Sam were always meant to find each other.
It’s eleven at night and Sam is in the kitchen half asleep, with baby Arabelle tucked into the crook of his arm, suckling greedily at the heated bottle he’s just made her. Her tiny fists move in small, uncoordinated circles, as she grasps at the yellow, knitted blanket your mother made for her.
He’s forgotten what it’s like to have an infant in the house, how disruptive they are, how much joy they bring. He hasn’t stopped smiling since Hannah Asher placed her in his arms a few weeks ago. You’re still recovering from the C-section, at your age it was the recommended method of delivery, the one with the least complications.
“No more after this.” You had told him a few days later when you were lying in bed, cradling Arabelle to your chest. “You have to get yourself fixed again.”
Sam wholeheartedly agrees because this little one is a handful enough already.
“How was she?” You ask him after he returns Arabelle back to her moses basket. You’ve just stepped out of the bathroom, your hair damp from your shower. Your wearing that coral robe he likes, the one he can loosen with one tug of the tie.
“Hungry.” He responds as he steps up to your, his hands coming to rest on yours hips. “How are you feeling?”
“Still tired, still sore.” You tell him as you tuck yourself in against his chest. “But a little more human.”
That’s the bane of motherhood, there’s barely a moment for yourself but you take it in your stride, lean on Sam when you need to. You wouldn’t change it for the world, no matter how fatigued you may be.
“I didn’t expect to feel like this again.” He tells you, his hand stroking through your hair. “So thoroughly happy, so completely exhausted.”
You laugh then and it’s such a beautiful sound, he wonders how he could have gone so long without it during your time apart.
“Come on.” He whispered against your temple as he guides you towards the bed. “Let’s get a little sleep before she’s up again in a couple of hours.”

It’s weird how normal it becomes to take baby monitor into the bathroom, Sam thinks as he set the device on the sink before stripping off his clothes. Already the room is filling with steam and he can hear you singing under your breath as you wash your hair. He can’t remember the last time you took a shower together, it’s something he’s missed dearly.
You’ve just rinsed the suds out of your hair when he steps under the water with you, the heat rains down on his skin, a sweet release from a hectic day of surgery. It’s getting harder these days to stay on his feet for so long, it’s a sign of his age he knows.
You pick up the shower oil, the expensive one that smells like patchouli before spreading it over your hands and beginning to sooth over his aching muscles.
God he’s forgotten how good that feels, having your hands on him like this, caressing, stroking, kneading. There’s an intimacy in it that transcends sex, that resounds right through his bones as you touch him in a way that feels almost ethereal.
He protests when you turn off the water, pouting as you step onto the bathmat, scooping up a towel as you go.
“Sam, you’re dead on your feet.” You say as you begin to pat him dry. “You’ve been running yourself ragged between the hospital and the baby, you need to get some sleep.”
He grumbles under his breath because he wants to return the favour so badly but you’re right, he’s absolutely exhausted. You usher him towards the bedroom, taking the baby monitor with you as you go before setting it down on your nightstand. There’s a chill to the air that comes with Chicago winters but the sheets are warm from the electric blanket you’d put on earlier in the evening. He sighs contently as you tuck the bedding around him.
“You take such good care of us.” You say softly, your lips brushing over his forehead as he starts to settle. “It’s time to let us take care of you.”

One Night In New York (NSFW) - You and Sam spend the night together in New York.
It’s been six months since the night you and Sam spent together in New York and it’s all he’s thought about since you left. It’s not just the physicality of the act that he re-lives, it’s the emotional experience. The feeling of connectivity that comes with making love to your soulmate. There has never been a woman like you and he’s always known they’ll never be one after.
That’s why he’s here back in Chicago, returning to his old position as Head of Neurosurgery. The woman who replaced him is leaving for greener pastures so his role is opening up again. It’s the opportunity Sam’s been looking for since Lucy moved to Canada, pursuing her dream job.
He’s lost in his thought when he steps onto the elevator. He hasn’t told you about his trip to Chicago, he hadn’t wanted to jinx it but now the contracts signed, he’s going to stop off at the winery you like, pick up a bottle of your favourite before he surprises you. He’s flicking through his phone, looking at places to live when the elevator stops and the doors open.
And there you are standing before him, looking more radiant than the night you ruined him in his sheets. There’s a pretty, rosy glow to your features, a brightness to your eyes. You’re holding a picture of something in your hand, something he recognises.
“Sam…” You whisper and that’s when Sam realises what floor you’re coming off, that your palm now rests upon a baby bump.
“Oh Elle…” He says doing the math.
“Yea Sam.” You respond softly. “She’s yours.”

One Night In New York (NSFW) - You and Sam spend the night together in New York.
Six Months - Sam gets a surprise when he returns to Chicago.
The baby was always meant to happen, Sam deduces as he lies in bed beside you, his palm resting lightly on the baby bump. He doesn’t believe in fate or the whims of the universe but when it comes to you…
Maybe there’s something in it after all.
This baby, it should be an impossibly with your age and his vasectomy but it happened. One night after two years apart and now there’s a tiny miracle growing inside of you. His tiny miracle.
“I want to raise her with you.” He had told you in the coffee shop of the hospital after you’d run into each other. “Whatever that looks like.”
He understands that your life is in flux right now. You hadn’t expected to fall pregnant with your ex-husband’s baby, you also hadn’t expected for him to move back across the country to be with you.
“I want to try again.” You’d told him, your hand clasping his. “Not for her, although we would rock co-parenting if we wanted to, but for us. I think we deserve another chance. If you hadn’t had to leave Chicago, if I’d stayed in New York…”
The two of you would have made it, you’re sure of it.
Which is why he’s now in your bed, tangled up in you, a couple of hours before his own flight back to New York.
Would it be the worst thing if he missed that plane? If he just never went back? He could have his stuff packed up and shipped back here without ever having to leave you or his little girl.
“I don’t want to disappear on you again.” He murmurs, his thumb chasing alone the line of your jaw. “I don’t want to go back to New York.”
“So don’t.” You whisper, your lips ghosting over his. “Stay right here with us instead.”

The Book Tour - You run into Sam while promoting your new book.
Sam spends the night loving you, his fingers threading through your hair as he kisses your mouth, your throat and every other single part of you he’s spent the past two years missing.
There will never be another woman like you. He’s learned that the hard way after immersing himself in the nightmare that is the New York dating scene. Every conversation, every interaction falls short because the truth is Sam is still in love with you and he knows in his heart that he always will be.
“God, I’ve missed you.” He whispers against your skin as you straddle his hips, his palms roaming up your back. “My life is terrible without you.”
You laugh and it’s the same breathy sound he fell in love with the first night you took him home with you.
“We both know that’s not true.” You smile, your head tipping back as he rolls his hips, hitting that sweet spot. “I saw you in the Time’s ‘Most Eligible Bachelors Over Fifty’.”
His grip on your waist tightens as his lips ghost that sensitive little space just under your ear.
“You think that matters to me?” He asks you as he starts to move faster, harder, each stroke punctuated by his words. “All I want is my wife, in my bed, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.”
His wife…
Those words, they do a little something for you, he can tell by the way you clench around his cock as he fucks you to the point of rapture. Your fingers dig into his shoulders as you come, your mouth covering his, drinking down his pleasure as he climaxes. His release spills into you, white hot streaks painting your insides as you rock together languidly.
“Was I everything you remember?” You whisper against his lips as he holds you close.
“Oh Elle.” He whispers, his thumb caressing the apple of your cheek. “You’re better than any of my dreams, any of my memories…”
He kisses you then, tumbling the two of you back into the sheets until it starts all over again, until your saying his name because he’s inside you, loving you the way that you deserved to be loved.
When he wakes up in the morning it’s to an empty bed and cool sheets. You had an early flight he remembers, you were moving on to the next leg of your book tour. He swallows down his disappointment as he picks up the note you’ve left on the nightstand, his thumb trailing over your cursive scrawl.
The next time you’re in Chicago you know where to find me.
