tbh i think c!sam only being present through his kind robot creation is possibly even sadder cause it invokes the imagery of sam sitting at his island, alone, sending instructions to samnook, trying to speak to the people he cares about but being too ashamed and afraid to show his face so he just speaks through his robot, who was always far more loved than him

Headcanon that Sam, the redstone genius, built Sam Nook as like a kind of redstone-powered robot that is programmed to not only get construction work done when Sam is busy with other things, but also to protect Tommy and Tubbo from danger. That’s why Sam Nook speaks Like That™ - it’s like pre-programmed robotic dialogue. And that’s also why he makes it his mission to defend Tommy and Tubbo whenever possible.

the thought that c!dream anly goes after C!tommy when he is alone. and that sam nook seems to catch onto this, so tends to help tommy when gathering and teaches him to build so he doesnt have to be alone.

and one time when dream does try and get close nook just gives him the ‘come close, i dare you’ look and leads tommy away without raising suspicion.
