To celebrate the first @childrens_books_north festival of illustration I’m sharing my illustration THE LAKE HOUSE tonight. I’m a bit late to the party because of parenting duties but still want to celebrate illustration and illustrators of the north and so proud of @emma.layfield and her team for putting this together. A lot of the creative focus is centred on London in this country, but the country is full of awesome talent that needs to be found and furthered. 🌿 This piece was inspired by our first ever trip to the Lake District in the north of England years ago. I finished Sawkill Girls today by Claire Legrand, and I have to say I really liked it, even though I wasn’t expecting to because it’s not a genre I usually read! My book WAITING FOR WOLF was very guided by my love for Daniel Johnston’s song SOMETHINGS LAST A LONG TIME. The lyrics are inscribed on the title page and dedicated to my brother Sebastian who lived with me through the loss of our mother who died of a brain tumour when we were young teenagers. ‘The red is strong, the blue is pure’... Daniel himself sadly passed away two days after my book came out last September 2019 and I never got to send him a copy. He was an awesome illustrator as well as beautiful musician. You should listen to his sweet music when you have a moment. I think it is unparalleled and will be with me for the rest of my life.
