maybe posting this was a bad idea
Hey guys, I made a stupid little thing.
The whole point is you can encode messages, and someone else with the program can decode them. I don't really know what you can use it for besides complicating the process of sending your friends goofy messages, although I had one person suggest it for creating secure passwords that are really easy to remember (provided you have the program handy and you mess with the settings a little bit).
if you don't care too much about how it works, just type a message into the top box and hit "Encode", then give the encoded message in the bottom box to your friends. Do keep in mind that this program is not super advanced encryption and should not be used for anything where you'd need to protect your data from your annoying cryptographer friends, because they'd probably crack the code in a couple hours.
Even so, you can still have a sort of "key" for the encoding by entering a number in these circled fields and hitting the appropriate multi encode/decode button. This lets you protect your message from the literally billions of other people with this program, so not just ANYONE can decipher it.
Alternatively, you can just hit the button without entering any number and it'll randomly pick a number for you. Just give that number to whomever you want to read the message and they can decode it!
There are also a few options that you can adjust to further customize your messages, but they don't make much sense without some understanding of ASCII tables. The program uses the ASCII number codes of characters.
By default I've set the minimum character to " " (a space), since that's the lowest value character that actually represents something readable. The default maximum character is "~", since the DEL instruction isn't readable either. So if you ever get the error saying "Maximum character must be higher value than minimum character", just reference an ASCII table like the one above and you can get an idea of what you can use.
Theoretically (but not exhaustively tested), only people with the exact same settings and number of iterations can decode your message.
The program will not encode characters outside the specified range between minimum and maximum characters, which can be used to selectively encode only parts of a message. (ie only including capital letters in your encoding range, then typing something like "you look EXTRA NICE today", giving you an output of "you look ETARJ EEYG today".)
The Character offset just works as another knob to encode the messages further.
Unfortunately I wrote this to get my feet wet with .NET, so it probably won't work on Mac computers. So if this post somehow gets past my 9 followers, I'm sorry but I can't help you annoy your friends. I might one day write a version in java so I can annoy my friends via phone, but I don't expect that will happen any time soon.
Anyway, feel free to share it with whomever. Annoy your friends on facepage with illegible text! Make people concerned for your health! Also great for making people think your keyboard is being attacked by your pet!
