The Eye with their little speech and then everything went to shit, naturally. Alek felt the cold floor beneath him, sterile tiles as his fingers curled against the ground. Familiar scents caught his attention and all too quickly the alpha was on his feet. He knew this place. He’d been here before but it felt... Different, looked different too. Some level the wolf had never seen? It was hard to say, he turned in place and looked down a corridor, then rounded on it again only to see that the layout of the doors had changed across it. “What the fuck-” Alek bit out before he saw the doctor on the floor, the one who’d put that fucking thing inside of him. “The fuck did you do?” Did she bring him here? It kind of looked like they’d both been brought here. “Hey!” Something twitched inside of him but there was no break, no release, Alek reached for the wolf but when he did nothing happened. He couldn’t shift. “What the fuck did you do now?!”

A patron of good wine, that was how the bulk of his friends seemed to start. Tastings with friends generally just turned into day drinking and him calling an Uber for Sanem to get home. “This is a good year,” Ciro offered as he replaced the glass she’d already finished with another glass of Rose. He turned to his own before he took a seat opposite Sanem under the shade of the parasol above them. Things were always slow this time of year, at least from what Ciro recalled. old Frascati was still a well kept secret but Yelp was starting to bring in the crowds of tourists. Thankfully someone else had always handled the tourists. “so, tell me everything: how’s work, love life, etc etc.”

Maybe the lab was inaccessible, for now. The doctor, however? Alek would never forget her scent, even through the drugs that she’d pumped him with he’d burned it into the back of his skull. Buried and burrowed so deep that the alpha would never forget it. Grief and rage muddled into one, a signature that punctuated so many of the Eye. On his way out the volatile had tore through walls and defenses, broken the bodies of guards and hunters alike in two. It came to him in blurred moments, flashes of blood and instances of warmth as flesh and ichor coated his palette. Alek remembered the screaming, then the retreat he’d made into the forest where the song of the fey awaited him. 

Months had trickled by as he thought of little else beyond the day when he would tear off that damned woman’s head. She’d given him a choice, lay down and die or fight to kill. To devour, to change. In retrospect Alek hadn’t much decision in the matter, the Eye wanted another lab rat and they’d have gotten one one way or another. In the end he’d resolved to find her on his own time, she was someone important to the Eye, he knew that much, her death would be a blow. A warning shot. Whatever security she had meant little to the alpha, her home easily navigated as he chased her scent to stand over her. His body retreated on itself, a maw broke down and gave way to rugged features, claws retracted as his limbs buckled in while his chest caved back. Bones broke back to their mortal shape and blue eyes that had been amber moments prior glowered down at her. “Any last words?”

This wasn't the first time in the past year that he'd awoken after someone had cut into his head, at some point there was bound to be some kind of permanent damage. If there wasn't already. Alek though, he felt... Lighter, like the air that had previously been so noisy had gotten quiet. The former volatile had forgotten what it was like to hear the breeze against the window but not hear the murmurs in the buildings across the street, or smell the violence happening blocks away. As he'd been under he had dreamt, as he so often did, but the jarring rendition of bleeding hearts between his teeth and hollowed cries weren't there. Alek couldn't remember what he'd actually dreamt of now and that was fine, welcome. Maybe Kayce.

The events that had happened throughout the war had already begun to fade, but Alek remembered fire and mayhem. He remembered endless screaming and he remembered how the man he'd loved had stood by his side through the madness. The man and his oldest friend. Putting anyone through that didn't seem fair, Alek had always been a miscreant but he wasn't a killer. So when Sanem showed up at his door, he'd taken her up on the offer, because he'd saved her life once and if she offed him while he was under there was about a dozen wolves who'd have had something to say.

It was dark when Alek opened his eyes, a sleepy, groggy look on his face when he saw the good doctor stood there. They had a complicated history but all that hatred that had been burning inside of him for the last year was quiet now. Still. Not gone entirely but one look at what he'd done to Rome and it was obvious why someone like her could hate lycans as much as she had. "Bad news Doc," Alek said as he moved quivering arms to sit himself up a bit. "you didn't gork me."

Alek roared as he jumped up and down on his seat while Sanem stood in victory over the others, all he could remember about this chick was that she'd saved his life, helped him when he was down, and made him way stronger than every other lycan in the city. Naturally he was rooting for her from the moment she stepped into the ring. "That was wild," the alpha said as he offered the good doctor a towel to wipe all that twink blood and viscera off.

The overseer was one of the few worth a damn here, his physiology allowed his mind to focus on several tasks at once, his physique beneath his coat stretching about the lab as he processed different projects at once. Deciphering Theneras’ formulas had been easy, the Roman branch of The Eye was far above the rest of the world in standard, coming here was meant to be a privilege but the withdrawn Hollowborn only cared about the missive. It was what he’d been promised so many years ago. 

His lab was cold, Ren preferred it that way, he heard the door open and hiding himself his various tentacles withdrew and disappeared beneath his coat and back into the form he’d taken as Sanem rounded the corner. In every post it was always the same: mistrustful and suspicious, but Ren’s track record gave a clear indication of where his allegiances lay. Nevertheless, there was only so high for a supernatural to rise. They prized his mind and his resolve, everything else was background noise.

“The gates are nearly complete. The soldiers will be able to travel through the Otherworld at their leisure soon enough.” He couldn’t help but poke his nose into other projects, an air of superiority seeping from him as it permeated the space between them. Brilliant as she was, Sanem was still only mortal. “That Volatile you created, he’s tagged. Why are you watching him? He should just be put down.” Ren had read the report, the creature broke out. A poor demonstration of military strength on The Eye’s part. A failure on Sanem’s. There was information on the creature’s vitals, logs of the lycan’s activity, brainwaves and patterns. Was this another study?

Costume aside, Nathan was surprised to see the overseer at the party. “What are you doing here?” He asked lowly after he’d caught her eye from across the room. Laughing, drinking, dancing - if anyone here knew who she was, what she did to them. The narrative would be completely different. Though, he supposed the same could be said about him.

notes: just pallin’ around

A bottle of wine between them, the vineyard beneath them, the open Summer sky above them. It was easy to imagine that moments like this might last forever, but nothing was ever permanent. People came into your life with the expectancy that they’d become fixtures, but Aksel was a mausoleum of his former self - a man haunted by a past that clung to him even after Genora had died. Remnants of their life together remained, the winery, her car, small gifts she’d given him over the years - each tucked neatly away. Then of course there were friends they’d had together, friends like Sanem. She, too, was what was left behind in the wake of grief and disaster.

“Do you wonder what becomes of us when we’re gone?” Aksel asked, “Heaven, hell, reincarnation?” He furthered. It gave him some comfort to imagine her soul at peace, the pieces of Genora that had been left behind were gone now. A spirit laid to rest before it could turn itself into a violent contortion of her former self. Aksel’s gaze remained fixed on the stars, sometimes he thought he could stare at them forever.
