This feeling, like a burglar, shakes me awake in the night, grabs me by the shoulders, rocks me hard and shouts into my face, “You didn’t check the battery in the smoke detector. You’re murdering your kids,” then it drops me in a pool of sweat and sleeplessness. When I trudge back to bed from checking the battery, it’s still there. “Pay attention,” it says, sitting at the foot of my bed. It has a knife. It’s casually whittling a sharp stick. “I’m watching you.”

So I fell for the old places, the old ways. A lot of what I loved was the beauty, but more even than beauty I wanted, paradoxically, the feeling of transience that visited me in the face of these things. All those lives that had passed down those streets, and mine, now, as transient as theirs. I welcomed this as a humbling.

Einstein does not successfully “save” her homeless friend. She does not quiet the voices in his head, she does not teach or convince him to live indoors, and she does not prevail over his history. She likely should not have tried. She does not successfully stay married, and she does not successfully follow her mother’s footsteps into a lifetime of social work or social services or generally rescuing those too disenfranchised to rescue themselves. But she does not fail either.

It did what all good friendships do: it lifted me out of my own limited perspective and made a difficult time in my life easier. It provided us both with companionship, affection, and joy. And what motives, beyond the universal desire for happiness, are required to want such things for ourselves?

My husband is honest enough to say that he has never found my body particularly desirable, but still he asked me out on our first date three years ago because he found my way of being in the world, my sense of humor and my intelligence, sexy. “That matters more,” he says, “and makes you beautiful to me.” Sometimes that to me breaks my heart a little bit; sometimes it makes me feel loved.
