Sometimes Verity Found exactly what she was looking for, and that was the problem. She had been looking for something that shouldn’t have been findable, but find it she did. Now she doesn’t know what to do with it.
A series of unlikely, but admittedly interesting, events unfolded seemingly of their own accord with very little input from the confused young woman. Ever since the Lumpy Stick of Destiny (as she has taken to calling it) fell into her hands, Verity had been running just to keep up with how quickly her life was moving.
A few days ago while tending her house plants, Verity absently wished she could find something that would make her orchids bloom. When she reached for her watering can, she found a carved branch in her hand instead. It only proved to her how powerful stray thoughts could be. She really should have known better.
Before she really knew that it wasn’t what she was reaching for, a man burst through her window, spraying her with glass. When she turned to run, she found herself standing in the middle of Time Square. Another step took her to a meadow. A third, somewhere else entirely.
After discovering that teleporting is apparently a Thing™ that she can do, she was able to catch her breath long enough to consider her circumstances. Concentrating really hard on Finding what she needed, she reached out her hand and came up with a book on Celtic lore. Before she could so much as crack it open, the same man who jumped through her actual window earlier threw a shiny metal star at her, which scraped her arm.
She ran, bleeding, panicked, and alone. Stepping through the sideways space where she keeps her odds and ends, she turned so many times that she has absolutely no idea where she went. Since every time she reaches into that area to find what she needs a man dressed in black appears to shatter glass, throw bits of metal, or otherwise attack her, Verity assumes he can somehow connect where she reaches into, to where she is. And she has been avoiding it.
While not entirely certain, she thinks that what she Found might be the Club of Dagda, or least that is what the book lead her to believe. Or maybe its just a piece of wood that someone wants badly enough to threaten her with violence. Either way, it’s not something she really wants to hang onto.
However, if it is so important that a man would go to these lengths to get it, there is a strong possibility it isn’t something she should just toss aside. So she has it in her backpack, and she took one final risk.
She reached into space to Find what would help her…
And she came up with a business card.
John didn’t usually have a phone.
Yeah, yeah, disconnected entirely from the 21st century, behind the times, this and that - he’s heard it all before, but what people fail to see is that that’s exactly the bloody point. He’s not a conspiracy theorist (much) but it’s simple truth that if you had a mobile, you could be tracked. If you were in any way connected to the grid, it was the same song and dance.
He’d never been a fan of the grid. Hell, he’d never been a fan of much of anything save smokes and alcohol, much less the establishment and cyber hackers (no offense to Ritchie).
What all of that boiled down to was that when he got the call, it was what most would consider a rare stroke of luck that he was able to answer it at all. That phone was in the mill house, which was protected by all manner of sigils, wards and spells, and so could not be found by anyone who didn’t know exactly what they were looking for - or anyone who had the number.
John Constantine never believed in luck or coincidence much. Not that he’d call the phone call fate, exactly.
He’d never heard of the woman on the other end in his life. Her problem was intriguing, however - not intriguing enough to get her direction to the mill house, bit intriguing enough to get a meeting.
So a day and a bit later, there’s a park bench in the kind of anonymous park that most covert operations would no doubt love, and there’s Verity.
He takes a seat after dropping his cigarette to the ground and grinding it out with the toe of his shoe.
“So tell me again how you found my business card, love.”

It’s supposed to be hypnotic. Breathe in and count 1, breathe out and count 2, and so on and so forth. It works for me.
Definitely gonna try that. Usually I just get frustrated and try not to kick the dog by accident when I move. He tends to somehow be everywhere on the bed. He is the night.

Have you tried counting 1-2-1-2-1, ad nauseam?
I eventually fell asleep, thankfully, but I'll try that the next time I can't sleep.
