Just came inside from watching a countless chain of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites passing overhead–and I do mean countless as in: we lost count.There were so many of them (a hundred? I dunno), evenly spaced out, crossing the sky one after another. One can only see satellites at a certain time–when it is dark enough to see stars, but the sun is still reflecting off the orbiting objects. The chain may have been visible for this entire period.
To date, SpaceX has launched 302 of these satellites, and anticipates putting almost 12,000 into orbit at three different altitudes. The goal is to create a global network for low-cost broadband capability.
It was pretty cool to see the satellite chain for the first time. But I can understand why astronomers are upset.
SpaceX Starlink satellites time-lapse in Bayonne, France. The Starlink satellites are launched from Falcon 9 by batches of 60 and form trains of satellites. SpaceX plan to deploy about 12000 of them to form a constellation of satellites to provide global satellite internet access. Time-lapse shot on Nikon D800 at 24mm, 1.3s exposure and a 4s interval.
