China modernizes agricultural system with satellite positioning
China is tapping satellite positioning technology to bring its agricultural system up to modern standards. Its new land titling project will assuage fears of food shortages caused by a rapidly growing population.
The pilot program used a satellite to map and define the land holdings of farmers in a small village of Yangwang in the Anhui province of eastern China. The mapping is intended to enhance the security of farmers and improve the chance of merging individual farms into larger-scaled fields.
According to Pan Shengyu, the overseer for one of the land titling pilot programs in Anhui, the mapping will let the new generation of farmers identify which plot of land is theirs after their predecessors pass away.
Other projects in Anhui province have scaled up the results of the pilot program in Yangwang. The Chinese government is planning to implement the land titling program nationwide.
