I went on a fishing trip!!! My first time in a rowboat!

It was cold! -- about 20 F (7 C) but we survived.

Here's a sketch of the Sauk river where we pushed our boat off into the river. We didn't catch any fish, which is fine by me since I'm vegetarian. I just enjoyed the boating, took photos and videos of the amazing scenery, and did a few sketches. I didn't think it was safe to take my raven Munin along (and she would have been terrified of the oars, honestly) but bizarrely I did choose to bring my tenrec Sonic along for the ride. I'll post more pictures and videos of the trip soon!

December 16, 2019  Enter the Steelhead Like it or not, it is steelhead season in the PNW in more locations that we can shake a stick at but for us, we are primarily focused on the Olympic Peninsula and the Skagit/Sauk system while it remains open.  Rain has been minimal here over the past few weeks so all rivers are in really good shape at the moment but that can change at any time.  Our reports page also has a link to water levels on most of our rivers with what we feel is good levels to be there and live links to current flows. Some large hatchery fish have been glad handing a few anglers on the Bogachiel and Sol Duc the past few weeks and a wild fish here and there on the Skykomish River.  This is absolutely the time to learn how to spey cast so you are ready for the meet of the season as well.  Nothing like a holiday gift of a private spey class with one of our great instructors. Puget Sound is also fishing well right now and the wind has mostly been pretty calm as of late and with the recent cloud cover, days have been perfect out there for the winter fly angler. Non gaming/writing stuff. I'm in Mt Baker National Forest camping and white water rafting this weekend. Whis is the Sauk river. We were supposed to raft this. It's a 3/4 river but the levels are so low the river is impassable. We're going to raft the Skagit instead. It's a 2/3. But this is still a pretty place.

Also I don't think you realize how much white noise there is in nature. Since is abnormal, even in the forest. Nature has her own music if you train yourself to listen

You may remember I was invited on my first fishing trip ever -- I took a bunch of videos and pictures, and I have decided to take you, my Tumblr friends, along on this adventure of mine. It was a very full day, so I'm making three videos to cover all the coolness. I did not take Munin (my raven) along... it didn't seem safe with all the talk of freezing water and possible river rapids. Also, she certainly would have been horrified by the oars: she strongly, strongly dislikes it when ape-creatures wave sticks around.

September 13, 2019  Spey Time These days we are able to employ spey casting in nearly all facets of our fly fishing endeavors but when fall arrives in the PNW, particularly here in the Seattle area, we feel its relevance even more.  With flows at low fall levels, swinging flies on the Yakima and Cowlitz for rainbow and cutthroat trout are terrific options and for those seeking slightly larger interactions, steelhead on many of the rivers around here is beginning to uptick.  Skykomish, Klickitat, Cowlitz, Hoh and Queets would all be great options to consider.  Low and clear water will demand longer leaders, possibly smaller flies and while your winter Skagit heads will work just fine with a floating tip, why not pick up and enjoy casting a Rage or Scandi head with a longer front taper.  These heads will turn over flies with delicate precision and elegance, showing off those casting skills so well. March 23, 2019 All Poppin’! Spring has officially arrived and nearly everything in our fly fishing world around WA is now officially ready for you!  Yakima and Cle Elum are flowing higher due to the snow melt from recent unseasonably hot weather but the bugs are flying and fish are eating. Puget Sound has finally received its annual installment of Chum Fry so you know what that means, time to get on the saltwater.  We have some great new rods for these two fisheries in house, 6wt Thomas and Thomas Zone and the Loomis IMxPro, both at $495.  Be sure to have Chum Baby flies in your box as you head out!  Lastly, the steelhead have been a bit elusive this season but they are here testing the patience of all the steelhead swingers out there.  It has been a low and clear water year but with snow melting and some warmer water, fish are moving around and coming in meaning this is the time to be out there hitting it whether that be Skagit/Sauk or OP, either way, just pick one and go! We have our Women’s Meet and Greet this next Friday evening here at the store.  7pm, snacks and beverages will be provided so please come by.  This is a women’s only event.
