Another tip to keep from getting scammed, ask to talk to the villager first instead of pay first. Because it's so easy for the host to wait for you to drop bells, save, then power off. But if you go talk to the villager first, for you to scam them you would have to run all the way back to the gate and save by leaving, when in all that time the host could just power off. So it's smarter to have the person talk to the villager first to avoid scamming altogether. (:
