for a moment, his instinct is to pull back, retreat, distance himself from the very idea -- after all, he's the doctor, he's the one that's meant to be doing the saving! -- but only for a moment. he catches himself, and with some effort, calms the racing thoughts that the simple statement produced. after a moment, his hearts slow, and his stony expression melts into one of fondness, tinged with an inescapable exhaustion that's settled into his very BONES.

“ i s’pose you have, haven't you ? ” it's only the first step in what's certain to be a very long process, and yet it is a step, and if there's anyone he wants at his side for this journey ? it's her.

"Yeah, I'll bet," he said with a soft laugh. There was no denying that Balfour was jealous of her. Couldn't help it. It always seemed to be the shit that came to Earth, all the bad stuff that they would rather all not be dealing with. The wonder was out there. All those places she got to run around with her Doctor. The nice stuff they got here usually only seemed to happen after averting the end of the world. Tonight? A light show that put the Northern Lights to shame.

Balfour was smiling as he glanced back to her. Still light, despite the day: "You guys taking passengers, or what? It's rubbish here."
