It confuses her for a long time, the favors.  He’ll do something so kind for her that it makes her blush, but when she thanks him, he’ll grumble a reply and stomp off, muttering.  It is not until later that she learns to grab a kiss before he can leave in a huff.

The agents at BPRD headquarters had spent the last few days staying out of Hellboy's way.  The big guy was ticked.  And it wasn't a problem he could beat up, which meant his mood was even worse.

It had taken Hellboy a while to figured out why he was in such a crappy mood.  He didn't like the answer.  It was definitely that Abe wasn't there.

Now Abe was not where he was supposed to be--hadn't been for two weeks--and it was starting to get on Hellboy's nerves.  It wasn't like he wanted to keep the guy in his tank forever or anything, but dammit, when Hellboy was at home, Abe was supposed to be there, too.  This was making him antsy.

Still, when he just happened to be heading toward a commotion near the elevators and heard a familiar voice, he played it cool.  "Hey, Blue!" he shouted from the outskirts of the crowd.

"Hello, Red," Abe replied wearily.  He looked a little worse for wear, but all in once piece.  He gingerly made his way past the agents and started down the hall.

Hellboy fell into step beside him.  "Where're you headed?"

"The infirmary."

Hellboy tilted his head down.  "You okay?"

"I think so."  Abe patted his arm reassuringly.  "But now that we have the equipment, I think it would be prudent to make sure."

"Yeah.  Good thinking."  Hellboy slowed.  "I'll just meet you in the library when you're finished."

"All right."  Abe raised a hand toward him in a wave and continued on.

Hellboy stood in the hallway for a minute before muttering, "Yeah, okay," and going to his room.  He kicked back and stared at an old black and white movie, but he didn't feel much better.  His first solo mission and Abe was handling it all casual-like.  He didn't seem bothered at all.  He'd just shown back up and gone about his business.  Well, fine.  It wasn't like Hellboy was one for mushy reunions or anything.  It had only been a couple of weeks.

Hellboy sat up.  But what if Abe was completely okay with being gone for two weeks?  What if he hadn't missed home at all?  He spent most of his time in a tank.  And, well, Hellboy knew Abe had his back, but the guy could be really reserved about things, and he was always making smart comments about Hellboy being "brash" or "like a particularly talkative bull in a crowded china shop" or whatever.  Abe had probably liked going out on a mission without Hellboy.  He was probably sorry he was back.

Eugh.  That was a nasty thought.  Hellboy didn't like it.  He kicked it out of his head and shot it in the face.  Metaphorically speaking, which he didn't do often.

Still, he couldn't pay attention to the movie after that.  He spent a while trying, then finally got up with a grumble and went to the library.  He was a bit edgy as he came through the door and called out, "Abe?"  But then came the noise that erased his stupid doubts.

Thunk-thunk.

It was the double sound of Abe's hands hitting the glass palms-first.

"Red," he greeted.

Hellboy looked him up and down.  "You check out all right?"

"Perfectly healthy," Abe assured.  One of his hands shifted a bit, but didn't leave the glass.  "Give me a moment and I"ll be out."

Hellboy mulled some things over while Abe swam off.  By the time Abe had gotten down the stairs, Hellboy had crossed his arms and was wearing a smug grin.

Abe blinked.  "What?"

"You missed me," Hellboy declared triumphantly.

It was the hands.  Abe wasn't expressive, but he was real sensitive with the psychic stuff.  He was always careful about where he pointed his hands.  Now some of his gestures earlier made sense, and the kicker had been coming right up to the glass to put both palms toward Hellboy.  It was how he got the most out of someone's presence.

As if to demonstrate, Abe held up a hand and wiggled his fingers.  "You missed me, too, Red."

"Yeah, well," Hellboy admitted, mood undimmed.  He clapped Abe on the back.  "How was Argentina?"

"Exhausting," Abe answered mildly.  He folded into a sitting position in one of the armchairs, and Hellboy landed in the one across from him.  "No wonder I let you handle most of the combat."

"You're pretty scrawny to be punching things, Blue," Hellboy agreed.

"Apparently."

They spent half the night swapping stories.  Abe regaled Hellboy with the tale of his adventures--difficult as it was to tell Hellboy a story without getting interrupted and derailed.  Hellboy told Abe about the excitement he'd missed.

Abe continued to go on solo missions, and Hellboy continued to become intolerable if he was away for more than a week and a half.  But they always caught up afterwards.
