On May 9 of last year, in the culmination of a fierce, five-year debate over the amount of hydrocarbon refrigerant that can  be safely used in commercial refrigeration, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) approved an increase in the charge limit for A3 (flammable) refrigerants to 500 g (17.6 oz) from 150 g (5.3 oz) in self-contained commercial refrigeration display cases.

Regional standards bodies get to work on HC charge standard

In May, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) approved an increase of the charge limit of hydrocarbons in self-contained commercial display cases to 500 g (17.6 oz) from 150 g (5.3 oz) under its IEC 60335-2-89 standard, thereby boosting the prospects for hydrocarbon adoption throughout the world.  But it is still up to regional standards groups to decide whether to accept the IEC’s new charge limit and its safety guidance or come up with something different.

New IEC standard for increasing HC charge officially published

… The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published the new version of IEC 60335-2-89:2019 for self-contained commercial refrigeration cabinets. The new standard allows higher charge limits for A3 (flammable) refrigerants to 500 g from 150 g – as well as a rise in the charge limit for A2 and A2L (low flammable) refrigerants to 1,200 g from 150 g.

HC charge-limit vote pushed to mid-March

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) will cast its final vote on whether to increase the charge limit for A3 (flammable) refrigerants in mid-March rather than by the end of the year. The charge-limit increase to 500 g from 150 g will apply to hydrocarbons like propane and isobutane in commercial refrigeration equipment under the IEC global standard 60335–2–89. The higher charge would likely widen the use of hydrocarbons as natural refrigerants worldwide.

Charge limit increase imminent

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has taken the next step towards increasing the charge limit of A3 refrigerants in commercial refrigeration equipment. 

As reported earlier this year, the change would increase the limit on A3 (flammable) refrigerants such as propane in commercial refrigeration equipment from 150g to 500g. This would enable hydrocarbons to be used in larger refrigeration and air conditioning systems, widening the use of these natural refrigerants.

Outcome uncertain on vote for HC charge-limit increase

The charge limit for A3 (flammable) refrigerants like propane in commercial refrigeration, which an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) subcommittee proposed to increase from 150 g per circuit to 500 g, is now subject to a vote that will determine whether the higher charge is ultimately enacted as an international standard.

… During a meeting last October in Vladivostok, Russia, IEC subcommittee SC61C decided to advance the draft amendment of IEC 60335-2-89 standard for commercial refrigeration, prepared by Working Group WG4, to the next stage in the process (CDV - Committee Draft for Vote).
