They found a battle between the Soulslayers and the Evils.

They were killed by an Evil. They were killed by a Soulslayer. They killed every Evil and Soulslayer, giving Chi Avende his first taste of his new magic. They ran past the Evils and Soulslayers, barely fighting.

They took control of the ship, crashed, and died.

In the chaos of trying to escape the ship, Chi Avende met a xeno woman named Lycaste. She threatened him, thinking he was under the control of the people who'd abducted them. But instead of controlling them, the parasites connected their minds. By seeing each other's memories, they knew they were both captives trying to escape.

Lycaste explained that they'd been kidnapped by Soulslayers, that the parasites were Soulslayer infants who would kill them and create their adult bodies from their corpses.

She promised that her people could remove the parasites- but only if they escaped the ship before it was destroyed by the people attacking it.

She called them the Evils.

Chi Avende thought back to Presbon, and felt a chill.

As the living ship was attacked, one of the attackers, Presbon, approached Chi Avende and offered him a deal. Power, for a price. After some negotiation, Chi Avende promised to help Presbon manage cracks in reality, by killing every Manulani outside of their original timeline. In return, Presbon granted Chi Avende magic.

One day, a living ship phased into existence over the domed city, and a tentacle broke through the dome and snatched Chi Avende up. It teleported him into a locked pod inside the ship, where aliens implanted a parasite into him. Then the ship was attacked and chased through dimensions, the pod was damaged, and he escaped.

After escaping the Manulani, Chi Avende took refuge on an uninhabited planet, harvested by an Arisax so long ago that only a few remnants of the former civilization remained. He made a home base in a domed city, the most high-tech place still standing. He spent his time exploring the city and scavenging the surrounding area for resources, resigned to that being all he could do and all he could have for the rest of his life.

Chi Avende played his part in the Last Battle. He had a decisive victory against one of the Manulani's top officials and deadliest fighters. Throughout the galaxy, battles were won and Manulani were forced to retreat. But Nene, with the power of several divines, defeated and collared Scarre. With his power as her own, she rallied Manulani against the last of the Realm- and won.

Chi Avende isn't a sorcerer, he's a warlock. He didn't learn magic because it was there, it was offered to him at a terrible price when he was desperate.
