Listening to the soundtrack to Wicked while doing housework and the song "What is this Feeling?" brought me back to some thoughts I had about @animate-mush 's post on sexy vs. scary vampires that I never got around to writing up. Mainly, what if it's not the vampires that are sexy?

Vampires are (super)natural predators of humans, so provoke a physiological fear response every time they hunt. But humans, the complex psychological creatures that we are, sometimes experience that fear response as sexual.

In Dracula, when the weird sisters appear, they look like beautiful women (obviously not a danger). They talk about kissing him (clearly not a threat). So when Jonathan's body starts reacting to their presence he interprets that reaction as sexual arousal rather than fear. And once Jonathan associates vampire attacks with sexual arousal, he's more likely to view his interactions with Dracula through that lens.

The crew of The Demeter, on the other hand, experience Dracula as an unseen predator. He has no real form (so far as the Captain's log is concerned) and is only a threat. No sexy vampire there.

Lucy's memorandum is similarly free of sexual interpretation. She doesn't remember Dracula himself, only the wolf, her mother's death, and being truly alone. So her reaction can only be fear.

Arthur still feels some attraction to the Bloofer Lady because he's used to being attracted to Lucy. He's never been afraid of Lucy before, but she has made his heart race.

Mina knows exactly what Dracula is when he comes to her, and he wants her to be afraid of him. So Mina is able to see her physical response as fear and anger.
