With Magdalena. Owner of the Family run #Schnitzelwirt A traditional Viennese restaurant that serves a huge portion of WeinerSchnitzels and potato salad. Was a pleasure she joined us for a quick chat about the business and how it gets really crowded in peak seasons. Highly recommended! (at Schnitzelwirt)
Settling into Vienna: The First Days
Strangely, I barely took any pictures my first week in Vienna... must've been because I was afraid of being judged as the typical American tourist by the new people I met. :P
So when I first moved into Gasgasse on Friday, OeAD Housing provided a welcome pack of Manner Neapolitaner wafers, a famous Viennese snack, on my desk. I tried them on Sunday and that was it. My life was over. These things are so freaking delicious that I ended up going to the grocery store and buying a 4-pack on Sunday.... no shame (actually yeah maybe a little), no regrets.
Monday was another day on my own. I decided to expand my grocery shopping and attempted to go to Naschmarkt, an open air market in the city. I really picked the worst day to go. Today was awfully windy and raining... my 1 EUR umbrella was absolutely useless outside so I was totally soaked, cold, and lost wandering about searching for the Naschmarkt. Thankfully, after much desperate asking, I found it and was able to buy oranges, onions, grapes and ramen (yesss! from the Asian shop!).
After my traumatizing shopping experience, I went to the main uni's ESN event at the Nachbar where I hung out with the girls I met the night before, met more people and played foosball. Fun times!
On Tuesday, I withdrew money in anticipation of my upcoming rent payment, bought a sweater from the New Yorker for less than 5 EUR(!), and made another trip to the 1 EUR store for post-its.
At night there was another ESN main uni event at Schnitzelwirt where I met up with the girls and had a ridiculous amount of schnitzel... One order of schnitzel for 6 EUR = 2 gigantic pieces of schnitzel, each the size of the large plate. I could barely even finish one piece, much less two. ):
But hey, no worries, because the crazy waiter provided me with paper to wrap my schnitzel and potatoes in....
After dinner with the girls and a group of fun Australian guys at our table, we all headed to the Travel Shack, an "Australian" bar exclusively for travelers and students. Met lots of cool people here from Italy, Austria and (of course) Australia. They even had fun drinking games like this where you have to take turns hammering a nail into a stump lol.
