Magic.
Susie McCallister was never the best camper. She was loud, she mouthed off to her counselors, she even got violent with a few campers on more than one occasion. She provided no reasons for this behavior; The counselors would’ve assumed it was because she was being bullied, due to her not-so-conventional looks or some rumors surrounding her romantic preferences...but none of that could be accurate, as she did not talk to anyone. NO ONE was her friend, no one was her enemy. Everyone equally disliked her.
She used fear not to gain popularity, but to gain isolation. No one had seen her in any other mood than angry, not even the witches who ran the camp. In fact, Susie disliked Ramona and would constantly fight with her. Her feelings on Alice were even worse. She only had one emotion to the campers, and it was seething rage.
That was, until the last day of camp. When all the campers traded stories with each other before the long ship ride back, gathering their luggage and meeting their parents on the well kept boats. And yet...Susie sat. Sat on the pier and watched as children smiled and hugged their parents, watched as they got together and hugged and kissed. And she just sat. Sat in that little pink and white dress her mother told her she looked good in. Tears welling in her eyes as the ships pulled their ramps up. Tears pouring down her cheeks as the ships left.
Susie’s mother hadn’t come to get her.
Alice stretched softly and looked out of her window. “Another good year...I gotta keep working on my binding magic. That tiger fiasco was almost a tiger disaster!” She said, giggling to herself as she looked out of her window onto the sea…McCallister was gone. At least, she wasn’t at the dock anymore. Someone must’ve gotten her before they left entirely.
Good riddance to bad rubbish, thought Alice. That Susie was a troublemaker, and she definitely knew who’s ‘repeat application’ was getting rejected NEXT year. Alice couldn’t handle another ten minutes of that. She felt a bit bad about it, but Alice was glad the girl’s mother waited to take her so long. Maybe that’d teach her a lesson.
Alice had a long day the next day, going around and making sure cabins were all sorted out, keeping things from getting too gross, and beginning to winterize the cabins. She also had some magic to learn; binding spells were going to need some work, but she’d get the hang of them. Just as she turned to go to bed, there was a knock on her door. Probably just Ramona checking in.
Alice was not expecting to see Susie McCallister at ALL in front of her cabin...but this wasn’t the susie she knew. This susie was a snivelling, tearful mess of a girl. The poor thirteen year old quivered and shook with each breathe. Her eyes were red and puffed from what looked to be hours of crying and that pretty pink and white dress was in tatters, covered in mud and dirt. Susie spoke in a shaky, failing voice.
“My...m-my mo-other never...never came to pick me up,” She said, amidst choked sobs and shaking breathes, “A-and I don’t know...what to do and I’m scared...I don’t wa-a-ant her angry at me…”
Alice paused. Alice looked the girl over and pulled her inside, out of the slight chill. “Oh, sweetie, it’s okay! We always have a few parents who forget every now and then, it’s alright...come in and let me fix you some tea.”
“I-I’m so sorry...She was...was right, I’m not…” She started another fit of wailing sobs and choked up curses under her breathe. She was past miserable, she was desperate. She shook and quivered in her chair as Alice got some tea on. She grabbed a small cup labeled ‘Ramona’ attached to some wire.
“Ramona,” She spoke into the cup, “Susie McCallister’s mother left her here and she’s nearly dying of sadness and I need you to come over NOW because...this stuff doesn’t happen!!” Alice may have been ‘enhancing’ the truth when she said kids were left here all the time. The last kid that was left here was Alice, and that’s only because she washed up on these shores before it was even a camp.
Ramona was a no nonsense kind of witch. She wasn’t a big fan of Alice’s parlor tricks. She was more interested in the manipulation of physical and metaphorical objects. Emotions weren’t her strength. She walked to the cabin, grumbling under her breathe and wondering what Alice had managed to do this time. Opened the door to the cabin.
“Alice? Are you th-” Ramona’s gaze was locked on Susie. McCallister? What, were they punishing her by keeping her on the island? “Well, what have we here, Alice?”
Ramona expected that coi smirk from Alice, the one she gave when punishing children for being naughty. But instead, she got a far more serious look. Alice held a teapot and wore a saddened, almost disheveled look.
“Ms. McCallister’s mother did not show up on the ship. We’ve received no telegram from the other port. They’re saying everyone who showed up went home.”
Silence filled the room as three cups of tea were poured. Susie drank hers shakily, almost spilling it as she looked off at the sea, silently begging for a ship to come...and also begging for it NOT to.
Susie knew why her mother had left her. She’d never wanted Susie to begin with. She hated Susie, and Susie turned that hate to the world. A summer Camp on an island far away from civilization seemed like the perfect way to get rid of the brat. Just leave her to die.
This was becoming more and more apparent to Alice and Ramona as they shared silent glances. Alice looked. As did Ramona. Ramona raised an eyebrow. Alice shrugged. Ramona looked to the girl, turned her head back to alice, and nodded. Alice let out a slight gasp, then looked, then nodded.
Ramona sat quietly down next to Susie. “Susie, dear. I know we’ve had differing opinions over the past months. But I do think you show potential in a field we didn’t necessarily teach the other campers.
“W-what do you mean...I’m not worth much of anything...my own mother doesn’t think I’m worth throwing off of a boat even…”
Alice sat next to her and placed a hand on her shoulder, squeezing it lightly to grab her attention. She wore a soft smile and gently sipped her tea. She nodded to Susie and looked.
