#DidYouKnow OLabs is a free online science lab launched to provide children with access to physical science labs. This helps them compete with students in better-equipped schools, and bridges the digital divide and geographical distances. Once they log in, students can start with theory, follow detailed procedures, and use animations with hints and tips to better understand how to perform the #experiment. #OLabs Source: https://www.olabs.edu.in/
This is an otheoscope, an instrument designed for measuring the mechanical effect of radiant energy. It's basically a modified radiometer. Mounted in a partial vacuum, the central rotor spins when the vanes are exposed to light. Chemist William Crookes (1832-1919) initially believed the vanes with black surfaces were pushed around by pressure from light radiation. This was incorrect and other theories were put forward. It was not until 1879 that Osborne Reynolds suggested the correct explanation, warmer molecules striking the edge of the vanes obliquely with a higher force than the colder molecules. . This is Schlieren optics in action 🎥. Schlieren photography (from German; singular "Schliere", meaning "streak") is a visual process that is used to photograph the flow of fluids of varying density. Invented by the German physicist August Toepler in 1864 to study supersonic motion, it is widely used in aeronautical engineering to photograph the flow of air around objects. . 🎥 Credits: Dr Mikołaj Pochylski, Antoni Cepel (student fizyki), Agnieszka Połatyńska, Dr hab. Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA, or protein molecules based on their size and electrical charge. An electric current is used to move molecules to be separated through a gel. Pores in the gel work like a sieve, allowing smaller molecules to move faster than larger molecules. The conditions used during electrophoresis can be adjusted to separate molecules in a desired size range. . . Making a Ballerina Homopolar Motor, aka Batterina! A homopolar motor is a direct current electric motor with two magnetic poles, the conductors of which always cut unidirectional lines of magnetic flux by rotating a conductor around a fixed axis so that the conductor is at right angles to a static magnetic field. The challenge with this design is balancing the coil to center on the battery as it rotates. . Credits: @world_of_engineering . . A common lab tool in biology and chemistry lab is the magnetic stirrer! It consists of a rotating magnet or a stationary electromagnet that creates a rotating magnetic field. This causes the magnetic stir bar to stir/mix the solution. The magnetic stir bar is either coated with Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or glass (less often) so that it does not react with the solution. . The advantages of using the magnetic stirrer include 1) consistent stirring (for reproducibility), 2) limiting risks of contamination & 3) allowing long duration mixing e.g. overnight/ multi-hour stirring. In some cases, it is combined with a hot plate so that stirring & heating of the solution can occur at the same time. . . Credits: @thenaivecell . . A simple experiment showcasing The direction of magnetic field lines represented by iron filings sprinkled on paper placed above a bar magnet. Field lines can be used as a qualitative tool to visualize magnetic forces. In ferromagneticsubstances like iron and in plasmas, magnetic forces can be understood by imagining that the field lines exert a tension, (like a rubber band) along their length, and a pressure perpendicular to their length on neighboring field lines. "Unlike" poles of magnets attract because they are linked by many field lines; "like" poles repel because their field lines do not meet, but run parallel, pushing on each other. The rigorous form of this concept is the electromagnetic stress–energy tensor. . Video credits : @daily_physics_experiment .
