In his essay, "Take It Easy Reeder" @trmyers1 notes that Scott Reeder’s work is never just a joke. “His ambidextrous enterprise has been successful for more than two decades…because he is an artist first, and then because he uses painting (and its history) as the thing that keeps his work together, as opposed to unglued." Myers continues: "Reeder is best known for his biting 'word' and 'list' paintings, though not only, I would argue, for the simple reason that they are funny. They are also easy to read. Reeder’s 'list' paintings dip into streams of consciousness that are somehow driven by brainstorming 𝘢𝘯𝘥 dreaming, day 𝘢𝘯𝘥 night. These large canvases are unapologetically and literally full of ideas…Transforming thoughts into real material that hangs on the wall and looks great, they are also running jokes that give us a serious look at the internal combustion engine of Reeder’s machine." Reeder’s work suggests an artist skeptical of the methodologies and mechanics of his chosen field, while at the same time completely committed to it. Reeder exposes what humor reveals about humanity, and how by exposing our shared connections, art can carry a social and political charge. Reeder responds: "All the art that I respond to has a healthy dose of contempt for humanity mixed in with beauty and joy. I’m actually more worried about what’s going to happen when the robots take over and the artificial intelligence software doesn’t understand my jokes. What will the consumer culture machine look like when it literally becomes a machine?" And his footnote? “I hope it’s not like those Google paintings with the animal faces.” #LOL. Same here.
